I'm watching the Discovery Channel show but they just keep referring to him as Jesus of Nazareth or Jesus son of Joseph.

They probably avoided the term because it means "messiah." And calling him that sort of implies belief.

Which reminds me, I ordered a paypal debit card with the name Jesus Christ on it and I have no problem using it at bars/stores to buy liquor and cigarettes.

No last names existed back then. It was 1st name and where they were from. At least if I remember right from watching History Channel. :/

her209 from California.
her209 from Orange County

Family Name came into 12 century, according to Wikipedia.

Then what's up with Judas Iscariot?

From Wikipedia:" What Iscariot signifies is unclear, other than its Greek suffix -otes, like English "-ite" or "-ian". No territory "Iscaria" has ever existed."

The secondary names that appear to be surnames in the New Testament usually denote where the person came from.

Yasua Ben Joseph.
Didn't the graves (ossuaries) have Jesus inscribed on them? Seemed to indicate either fraud or different dude. (IMHO)

Because it's how you say Joshua in Spanish. Like how Paul is Pablo and James is Diego. Their name for Jesus Christ is Jesu Cristo.

Christ comes from the Greek for "Annoited One." Jesus may have been a Jew but the first Christians were Greeks.

Jesus' name in Aramaic, his native language, would have been Yeshua bar Yusef (Joshua son of Joseph).

Like most ancient names, and particularly Hebrew names, Joshua (Yehoshua) has a meaning, "God (Jehovah) is salvation."
