Is cellphone entworks going the wrong direction?

Way back when... I had a cellphone i could use anywhere... it was reliable as hell...

Now with the new direction of cellphones I am more displased than ever...

Ever since the dual/tri modes went out with the verizon analog network, there are tons of gaps in my service coverage... places where you only get 1 bar of signal... and entire regions where there is still no cell coverage at all...


instead of concentrating on giving people internet, music, GPS and all this digital revolution crap... WHY arent we focusing on getting complete 100% nationwide digital coverage? Coverage that is relaible... so that my call doesnt drop if i tilt my head or take 2 steps...


Why couldnt IDEN become the technology of choice? It isnt fancy... but it works damn near everywhere... with crystal clear voice, and good loudness too.


Since were stuck with CDMA850, Cant we just pump up the wattage on these towers or something? Put up enough towers so that we can swim in cellphone waves!!!
I hate digital cell phones!!!

Unfortunatly, we are moving toward a data centric society. The new cell phone standards will be all about data (voice wil be voip). Iden is hugely ineficcient with data (speeds 20kb/sec or less) while it seems the majority of carriers (At&t, Verizon, and Alltel are official so far) will go with LTE as a 4g standard, with data of 50 mb/sec or more. With a proper setup, analog can be effective 75-100 miles away from the tower (with amp and a yagi antenna), while digital maxes out at 30 miles or so, so the solution wont be increased power, but more towers. If enough people complain, some companies will look into adding coverage in a area, or if you travle thru there alot, buy a amp and external antenna.
