i'm thinking about buying a new processor. i dont have that much money and i was thinking of getting a Celeron 800. I use my computer to play games. is Celeron 800 a good option to buy in my case, or should i go with some other processor? would i be able to play such games as soldier of fortune and latest racers with 128mb ram and 16mb voodoo3?

thanks

Yeah it should do it. But, it would help if we had your full system specs. Unless you have a really slow processor, a new video card might be a better investment. Or a new motherboard/cpu would be better. We need more details :)

i dont have a processor right now. my P3 550 got burned up so i need a replacement. my motherboard supports socket 370, i believe apollo pro 133 chipset. i have 128 mb of ram right now, and i'm about to get 64 more. i have a 16mb voodoo3 3000 which i bought 5 months ago, i just want to be able to play latest 3d games nicely, without spending over 150 for a processor. what should i do?

How did your CPU burn up? I can't seem to find the Celeron 800's anywhere, are the even out yet? You might try just getting a Pentium 3. The extra cache will be better for games. You can get a P3-700E for around $160. It might be worth it to spend the extra dough and get the P3, as they will be a good bit better.

The cheapest you can find Celeron 800's for is over $200. They are grossly overpriced. DO NOT BUY ONE. You can buy an equivalently or higher clocked PIII for the same price. If you want my two cents, buy a 566 and overclock it to 850.

16mb voodoo? Thats rather low if you want to play soldier of fortune. Your video card is just about as important as your cpu, that game can be set to use large/very nice textures. Anyhow, a celeron above 800mhz using atleast a 100mhz bus would easily run that game. I'm not saying that your voodoo wouldn't be able to run it, it just might not look as nice as it could:p

If I were you, I'd spend a little more money and get something like a Duron 700 and a good socket A mobo for around $175. That would give you better performance than a Celeron 800 would. Plus, you could upgrade to a higher speed AMD chip later on while paying less than what an equivalent speed Intel chip would cost, since AMD keeps a pretty good price point on their parts.

make sure of the chipset and motherboard that you have. The new CII 800MHz chip would run games fine, but are as much or more than a new PIII 800Mhz.

>I agree with spamboy.Buy a 566 and overclock it to 850 if your short on cash or if you can. Get the P3 700E (SL45Y)@ 933 . Even without overclocking there still a fast chip.
>If your going to play Soldier of Fortune. Sell your 16mb voodoo and get yourself the Geforce 2 MX or better. Your going to run into problems with the 16mb voodoo. Can go <a target=new href="http://

>Good luck...

Check www.pricewatch.com I just checked and the have P3 600 for $105 listed. I'd agree with the above tho, get a ABIT KT7 for $128 and add a duron 650 at $42. You can easily overclock this processor to 950mhz and have a blazing system.

No matter if you upgrade to a Intel or an AMD CPU, keep in mind that your graphics card WILL be slowing down your machine. Now that doesn't mean SoF won't run fine, I know it ran pretty good on my Celeron300 with a Banshee. But you will not be able to play recent and upcoming games with that video card, even if you get a high speed CPU.

If I were you, I'd get a very cheap CPU which is compatible to your current mobo and overclock it. Use the money you saved to get a GeForce 2 MX, and you'll have a rig that's fine for another year.

I would wait until the middle of next week when Intel cuts thier prices, then you could pick up an 800 CPU for less than $125.

A friend of mine has a 566@933 and a 633@1000 and they both work great in 3D first person shooters.

I just sold my Celery II 566@954 chip for under 100, and it tore it up for games, definately beats out the C2-800...you're really bottlenecking with the 66mhz bus speed there.

you'll be fine with your v3 in soldier of fortune..with most if not all the eye candy on, heck i played SOF on a p-200mmx and voodoo banshee and it ran alright. So keep the v3 for now and get a P3 in the 600-700mhz range.

I really don't know why celerons are even considered anymore. I have 2 systems side by side
Cel 600 at 900 with Matrox G450 192 RAM
Duron 600@900 with GF2MX and 256 RAM
Granted the G450 is the limiting factor but in business apps, internet browsing and certain 2D games (not quake 3 type or half life or anything close to those) this damn celeron at 900 was noticeably slower and way less nippier than the duron even with a faste Hard drive. No my celeron days are now officially over.

Cheapest, fastest is to buy an overclocked celeron 2. Best bang for your buck unless you want to go for new mb, vid card etc.
533 & 566 are a pretty good chance to overclock to 800/850 if you buy untested.

new mobo=$120~
Duron 600=$45

Never forget about that, since duron tends to whoop the celeron2 in benchmarks, doesn't it? And the 600's pretty overclockable too, it it not? (corect me on this)

Board and revision number? BIOS? The CPU may not work out of the box with Coppermine. If you don't have another CPU with which to boot up your PC then you may be stuck with a non-functional CPU. Even if all it takes is a BIOS update, you can't do that if the Coppermine doesn't work. :p

Assuming you CAN run Coppermine: The Celeron 800 runs at 100 FSB, but it's way overpriced. I would go either with a Celeron 566 for US$60 and overclock it to 850, or just buy a PIII 700 for $150 minus whatever the price slash is going to be. (Final price <$100?) I can understand why people always recommend AMD Durons, but as far I'm concerned, it's not really a viable option because: 1) It breaks your budget (esp. if you include tax and shipping). 2) It requires a MAJOR rejigging of the computer. 3) It may require a reformat to get everything working correctly. However, this may be warranted if your motherboard doesn't support Coppermine properly.

My guess is a Celeron 850 = PIII 667 = Duron 700, give or take 50 MHz and depending on the benchmark/app. Note that the Celeron is overclocked and the PIII/Duron are at stock speed. Overclocking of the PIII 700 probably wouldn't be terribly hard, because of your VIA chipset. Your video will run at a reasonable speed, and you can slow your memory if necessary. But there is a strong chance you can even run that PIII 700 at 933 without too much effort, as long as you have good cooling. Guaranteed chips are also an option.

That Voodoo 3 will be fine.
