Is canned fruit worse than fresh fruit?

i like eating canned pinapple and peaches, and was using this to suppliment my fruit and vegetable requirements. am i disadvantaging myself by eating canned versus fresh?

canned fruit most likely has no health benefits. the vitamin C will have been destroyed by the time you get to eat it. and other than that there is just a bunch of carbs... anyways, it doesn't taste nearly as good.

I agree about the canned pineapple, but I suggest grabbing a whole fresh one. Takes a lot of prep work, but OMFG THEY OWN ALL. Just a note, don't cut out the core like people say, that's the best part IMO.

yea, i really think there's too much sugar, but i just took it as how pineapple really is (i can't remember the last time i had fresh pineapple)

in the 1 can of pineapple i have which is 20oz and contains 4.5 servings, there are 25% of Vitamin C per serving, so there's enough Vitamin C in there, but like i said, i was worried about the sugar.13g of sugar per serving and a total of 15 g of carbs per serving. so 1 can of pineapple isn't much worse than a coke right?

..I rinse my peaches and pears..gets rid of all the sugar improves the taste a lot..use it in my oatmeal. And raisins too.

Only because of the added carbs. Those are purely simple carbs. Straight insulin spike.

hell yeah! as a hypoglycemic, i call them "canned comas." eat them, and one hour later i'm on the floor in insulin shock. 🙂 but they're fine if you eat them with some protein to slow down the sugar digestion. same with any sugary food, of course.

look, if you take your daily vitamins, it doesn't really make much difference what you eat in terms of quality of vitamin content. you're just looking for a decent balance of protein, carbs, fat, and fiber. canned fruit will provide you with the same fiber as normal fruit, but also some extra sugar, so maybe skip the oreos afterwards and eat them like a dessert. just be aware of the extra "empty calories" and don't worry about it.

thanks for the study, it's really heartening as far as vegetables are concerned. unfortunately they didn't talk about sugars or carbs in that study.

i don't really eat cookies or other junk food. i don't really like candy too much. sometimes though i get a feening for some ice cream, and will kill a quart of chocolate chip mint baskin robbins ice cream in a matter of 2 - 3 days. but that's few and far between, like maybe once every 3 months or so

edit: also i don't really like taking daily vitamins because they have too high quantities of fat soluble vitamins and i'm worried about vitamin buildup

Ummm ... I'm not sure I understand you! Why such broad generalization? There are way more water-soluble vitamins than there are fat-soluble vitamins. The only fat-soluble vitamins that I'm aware of are vitamins A, K, E and D. Even with those few fat-soluble vitamins, it takes a lot to reach toxicity. And if you'll be reasonable, you could avoid that. Just read the RDA and toxic level making sure never to exceed the recommended safe amount, and stopping whenever you come close to the maximum your body can store.

Of course, the best way to obtain the necessary nutrients for your body is always through foods. Canned food doesn't sound good to me since they're usually processed and other factors, including minerals generated from the can itself--such as chromium, aluminum and iron. The body needs these different minerals, but a very little amount. I don't know how much is contained in canned foods, but it certainly isn't the same as eating the fresh food and knowing what you're getting into your body. Nothing beats the natural way, in my opinion.

I thought your "natural" way was over a toilet with a spoon?

well it is that toxicity buildup i was worried about, plus the added strain of having 1000% of vitamin C, vitamin A etc... in my body. i know that when i take vitamins that my piss us a "mellow yellow" yellow, and that makes me think it's putting a strain on my kidneys

is this true or not?

Ah! Someone who actually cares about thier health. Good info on Omega 3s

yup, i've been takin fish oil ever since reading about it in the Arnold Schwarzenegger encyclopedia, that is when i workout. i haven't been working out because of school so i stopped taking it

The color of your urine is because of the B-complex. You have nothing to worry about if you consume a normal level of water.

my water consumption fluctuates, some days i only need 3-4 glasses of water throughout teh entire day (i don't drink anything else). other days i need like 8 or 9 tall glasses of water. i NEVER deprive myself of water, and try not to drink soda during the week. if i do drink soda, i make sure i drink water after it to help counterbalance the soda, and i try to drink diet sodas during the week. on weekends after drinking regular soda, i will get VERY thirsty for water and will drink like 6 glasses

also, the vitamins i have say the freshness is guaranteed until like dec-04. think they're still ok to take?

Yeah, that's fine. I've never had any issues with old vitamins.

As a replacement for soda I'd check out Xylitol + kool-aid. ^^

Xylitol will give you the energy of carbs without the triggering an insulin spike, as it can be absorbed directly by the cells. Insulin isn't called the fat horomone for nothing. Xylitol is also naturally occuring and your body even makes it. Good for the teeth too, because the bacteria that causes cavities tries to absorb it, but can't digests. germ equivalnet of indigestion

"After 2 years the mean increment of decayed, missed and filled tooth surfaces was 7.2 in the S-group, 3.8 in the F-group, and 0.0 in the X-group."

Emerald Forest Sugar is where I've been buying it. It's the finest quality (I know I did a mass spectrogram of it) and the best prices online. I mix it with fructose since it's rather expensive.

my soda substitute is carbonated fruit water, 0 cals, 0 carbs, 0 sugars, and it's pretty much carbonated water and fruit flavoring. tastes really good when cold and is really cheap!

but what's wrong with diet soda? also, on weekends i actually drink regular soda because i want regular soda. i prefer barqs root beer, yum! i can't imagine people reaching for a soda when they get thirsty, or reaching for the bottled corn syrup based ice teas, blah, yuck

it boggles my mind!
