Is call of duty 4 on the xbox 360 not the best online FPS game ever?

Seems to never get old and has been going strong for a while.

Halo 3 came and went but COD4 is hanging in there.

For me Counter-Strike might still be the champion. I love COD4, but in its day Counter-Strike was a much greater leap from what existed at the time, and it was certainly a powerful influence on COD4.

Hard to compare FPS on a console with FPS on a PC. You might preface your question with that. Personally I can't stand any pure FPS on a console, the aiming is just too slow and erratic (which is why many of them have aim assist...)

Console wise, I wouldn't say COD4 is the best just yet, because it hasn't even been out a year.

I would put the #1 title currently to Halo 2. I personally played that game daily pretty much for at least 1 year straight, and I knew many many people who did the same.

COD4 is definitely the best FPS of this generation no questions asked though, but all time IMO it is Halo 2, or at least tied with Halo 2.

No--that crown belong to Quake 3 Arena which will soon be replaced by Quake Live when it goes...er live. I'm in the beta right now and have been playing it a lot recently. It's just amazing how well the gameplay holds up. It's just rock solid. The DM levels are second to none in design and some of the stuff they streamlined to make the experience faster and smoother really pays off overall--and it's free.

Quake 3 is the best multiplayer fps ever. No contest.

COD4 is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite depending on where I place the original UT.

Why just the 360?

I remember seeing a thread on the official CoD4 forums complaining about a lot of features that Infinity Ward "should have" added to the PS3 version, and most of them were features that Xbox Live itself provides. So if I had to guess I'd say Xbox Live vs PSN is what makes the Xbox 360 version "better."

Where did Halo 3 go? It is still the second most played game on Live. GTA IV is third.

i've been playing cod4 on the ps3 and damn. it's a great game. has a little hang ups here and there but what game doesn't. i admit it's not css but it's different. and good. never thought i'd be a console fps'er but these thumbs are opposable for a reason!

If you're only talking about consoles, then maybe, but if we include PC games I'd have to say not even close. I'd probably pick CS.

I tried to find the thread, but it looks like they migrated to new forum software and didn't bring the old posts with them. It was a thread listing a bunch of things that Resistance had and CoD 4 lacked, and I just remember thinking that a lot of what they were complaining about were native features of Xbox Live.

Most people agree that XBL is a better service than PSN (other than the fact that they charge for it), so just take the list of features that XBL has and PSN lacks, and that's probably why the OP specified the Xbox 360 version.

Not actual gameplay features, but features of the system that enhance the online experience.

I've been playing Halo 3 like every night this week. I've been meaning to pick of COD4 though, I've heard it's pretty ok.

It's more than pretty ok. 😉

Counter Strike/Source is/are the most overhyped games I've ever played. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them, they're alot of fun, but people talked about it like it's a life changing experience to play. To me CS is just another "run and gun" game allbeit with good level designs and interesting gameplay modes.

I think CoD 4 is a much better/deeper game. Perks are totally unique but add so much to the game (IMHO). Same with calling in backup, UAV, etc.

I'm with the OP, CoD 4 is one of my top multiplayer games of all time (I'd put it slightly behind Medal of Honor: Allied Assult, the perfect R&G game ^^).

I think I liked Gears of War slightly more than CoD 4 as a whole but for MP only CoD might get my nod.

If you started playing it in/around 1999, I don't think you'd call Counterstrike overhyped. That's like calling Starcraft overhyped. I haven't played CS:S, but I'd agree that CoD 4 is definitely a better game than Counterstike, even disregarding the obvious graphical differences.

I'll admit that I didn't start playing CS until probably '01 or '02. Still, people were buzzing about it. Once again, I liked the game, played it quite a bit, I just didn't think there was anything particularly spectacular about it.

Oh, and Starcraft was overhyped as well 😛 (nyah nyah!).

To each his own. I played through the underwhelming CoD4 campaign, then played about 7-10 hours of multiplayer (I tried really hard to like it because everyone was raving about the damn thing) before uninstalling and seling the game. I really enjoyed CoD2 (both SP and MP) but this one did absolutely nothing for me, it just felt like a tired re-hash of CoD2 which, to be honest, started to grow tiresome after a few weeks itself.

CS is still head and shoulders above this game even though it has not changed significantly (aside from changing the engine and a few other things along the way) in the soon to be 10 years of its existence.
