My wife and i having had a baby just a month and two weeks ago, dont get much time to watch the shows we came to enjoy. Is a tivo worth the money? Or should i just build a pvr box and run with it?

Bought one about two years ago, and haven't looked back. I also have a Windows Media Center machine in the living room (different house), and TiVo is just much more user friendly and streamlined.

Tivo's great. I love my MediaCenter (have a MCE box in the livingroom and Tivo in the bedroom), but it's more of a project than an appliance. Tivo just works and works well. :D

I miss my Tivo :(

I still have my Comcast DVR but my Tivo was sooo much better.

You'll never go again without a DVR once you get one.

Does your wife like taking computers apart, is she a geek? If not then any home rolled DVR you build will not be as easy for her to use as TIVO. Get the Tivo and buy the lifetime upfront if you can afford it, it's worth the investment.

Sometimes I wish I had a girlfriend or wife so I could buy presents for me and say I bought it for her.

Honestly, my gf has absolutely no problems using our MCE box. It's even easier since everything is integrated...there's no changing sources on the receiver to watch a dvd, etc. However, because of the time I spent tinkering to get it just right, I wouldn't recommend it to someone with a newborn. ;)

I didn't see the big fuss about them until I got one.

Would never go without one again.

It allows you to transfer shows to your PC where you can burn them to DVD (you must buy myDVD) or transfer them to Portrable Windows Media Players.

The transfer is extremely slow and myDVD is extremely slow.

I actually was lucky and got a 40 hr version for free (after rebate) from Best Buy. That's why I like Best Buy. Hot girls and great deals. You can't beat that!

ok, well where is the cheapest place to get one?

If you can wait Circuit City sometimes has it for $99 - $100 MIR = FREE

They should have another in a few weeks.

Yes FREE, the catch of course is the $12.95 per month fee or $299 lifetime fee.
