is bsd based on linux? or is beos based on linux? and help downloading freebsd from ftp,

I'm at the distro ftps but there is so much stuff to dl, how do i know whats what? i want to get ver 4.0 to run under secure bsd, but the site shows 4.x and 4.11, is there any one out there knowledgable enough to help, or better yet, some one who has all the neccessary packages in one place that i could Dl it from?? please help!

i got that file, but don't i need an install of bsd 4.0 under that? from free bsd.org?

FreeBSD is a different thing than SecureBSD, the name might be misleading, but you could compare them to Redhat and Slackware linux. The name might lead you to beleive it's a secure version of *BSD*. It's a name, it's security is debatable, but it's not FreeBSD+Security.

oh so all i need is that one file? can you suggest something to make a partition bsd usable?

Just get a boot disk and a root disk and partition as wanted... the unix fdisk & cfdisk utilities have many more file types to choose from than you are used to with MS-fdisk.

a unix bootdisk, oh yeah i have tons of those laying around, in fact i've got a few hangin out of my nose right now. . . can ya lend me one though?

Depending on your motherboard, you might be able to boot off the burned image you dowloaded.
It might be bootable. Try that
