I don't know that I would say that today's QB's are any more athletic than those I mentioned. Ever see Stabler play? That man could make Elway scrambling look like a granny in a wheelchair. I will give you the fact that the OL, DL, and LB's today are larger and more athletic, but I don't think that's true concerning modern QB's. Except for the physical freaks McNabb and Culpepper I would say the old timers were every bit as athletic as the modern guys.

its the defenses i'm talking about... they're heavier and faster, so they're more forceful when they do hit. if those rules protecting the QB weren't in place you'd have a lot higher turnover rate in QBs, and there aren't enough good QBs to get 1 to every team in the league.

Nah....the big ol fatties on the OL pretty much cancel out the big ol fatties on the DL.....both sides are MUCH larger than they used to be....I can remember thinking that the 250lb linemen were huge when I was a kid....now there are RB's and TE's that weigh that much....

Gotta love seeing guys crash into each other wearing leather helmets.....plus I love watching the old news reels of the games where they talk about that daring innovation.....the forward pass.....

That man could NOT take the hits like Favre dose that's for sure, amazing player though. It's hard to call someone the greatest, the man I enjoyed watching the most in the QB position was Steve Young. I didn't like the way John Elway played though, all he did was stand in the pocket and NEVER ran, I like a QB that has more than just an arm and Favre is one of those player's. He's at the top with the best of them for sure.

Yeah, I liked Steve Young back in the day. It just sucks how those concussions start to kick your ass.

My top ten

1.Unitas
2.Montana (Best field general out of the group)
3.Stabauch
4.Starr
5.Bradshaw
6.Tarkenton*
7. Farve/Young (Probably the two toughest QB's to play on Championship teams)
8. Namath
9 Y.A. Tittle
10. Elway/Aikman

Fouts was great as was Marino but neither won a Championship so while they may have had the Athletic skills they obviously didn't have what it took to take them all the way.

* Takenton never won the Championship either but there is no doubt about his passing and leadership skills.

Athletic ability is only part of being a great QB. Field Generalship is as important. I think Farve is probably physically the toughest QB out of the top ten

nice list red

i probably wouldn't put them in the same order, but prob same 10.

tho, i'd put marino in top 10 over tarkenten.

marino was the best pocket qb of all time.

btw, staubach is my personal favorite, but i wouldn't put him as high as #3 as an overall great qb. definitely top 5 tho.

Yeah and he has Championship rings to prove it

He might have been one of the best passers but he couldn't lead his team like the others. In that aspect Bob Griese was a better QB than Marino(Montana being the best).

hmmm. how do you "Prove" that tarkenton had more leadership and passing than marino??

seems a bit contradictory there.

marino was GOD. :)

Marino never had a running game to help take the pressure off him like Bob Griese did. He may have never won the Super Bowl but I still think he was the best pure passer to ever play the game. Man had an arm and a quick release that were unbelievable in his prime.

Marino would always lose his cool when his teamates would screw up. He seemed to be in it more for himself than his teram. On the other hand Tarkenton was the ultimate team player. I actually remember seeing him get into a fight with a DB when the DB took a cheap shot at one of his receivers. Considering that he was only 5'11" and under 200 LBS that was pretty remarkable.

He also wasn't a slug like Marino. His scrambling abilities were about as good as Stabauch's who was nicknamed Roger the Dodger because of his great scambling abilities.

I'm not saying Marino wasn't great, hell if I had gone on to list my top 15 Marino would have made it easily. Considering all the grteat QB's in the history of the NFL that's still pretty damn good! I like Fouts better than Marino though because he was a lot tougher.

Farve is a lot of fun to watch. HE plays like he is the playground or sandlot someplace, totally by the seat of his pants. I wish he was a Jet or a Giant. NY QBs have sucked for a long time.
