Is boxing a good way to get in shape/lose weight?

I hate the idea of running to get in shape... too boring

I see those boxers on TV and it looks like they're drenched with sweat after they're done fighting. Anyone else think boxing is a great way to get in shape? I'm thinking of joining a boxing gym or something...

hell yes

boxing is such an underrated sport... try throwing 5 hard punches and see how tired you get.

Boxing is an awesome sport.

yes, but if you do a less intense workout you will be able to condition better. blowing your wad in 10 mintues of boxing will never get you conditioned...

I was wondering about this also...not actual boxing, but using a boxing bag for a certain length of time every day. I would assume it wreaks havoc on your joints later in life, or am I off base here?

I think a good way to get in shape is to train like a boxer, but not actually box :p

boxing is good, we all know rocky was teh shiat
dont forget rocky also ran a lot...like up the steps at the philly art museum (i've done it!)
if you are really opposed to the idea of running, how about cycling or something like that. You need a good cardio workout to truly get in shape and lose weight, while boxing is an amazing workout, you can't do it for very long without getting tired and the idea of a good cardio workout is for it to be something that you can do for long periods of time in order to build up your stamina.

just a couple ideas

Hmm, maybe... isn't boxing itself a cardio workout? I hate running because it's BORING... boxing seems like fun.

Boxers train by doing lots of cardio, not just throwing punches in sparring matches.

Well uh, isn't 'throwing punches' cardio by itself?

they're saying you won't build up stamina by throwing punches, you only do that by running and doing other boxing related activities e.g. jumping rope, playing DDR

id say you are right, when i used to hit the punching bags, if i did it too hard or too long, my head would start to hurt from the shock going up my arms

Boxers are in great shape because they do a lot of running to build up their stanima. Those who don't look like George Foreman.
