nope, the most famous one aishwaryia rai starred in a recent movie called bride and prejudice that was supposed to bring bollywood style into the west course it bombed. i'm not sure bollywood is good for much. its too conservative, too cookie cutter production. sure you always see figures for the number of movies bollywood spams out, but what good is numbers when you generally make nothing important or offensive. the later being more important in many parts of the world that import such movies.

as for not knowing about bollywood, you don't need to know indian people, its a nice filler story for any news show or magazine that happens every once in a while. you really can't miss it unless you've been living under a rock

The current stereotype of us Indians are that we're supposed to be dark brown accented people.

That's fucking South India. Us Indians in the US are light skinned (mostly). We're basically white.

Not the same thing here. Just as I and mattpegher said, there were actually a lighter skinned group of European tribes that entered the bloodstream. Look at poor people from tribal areas in India, and you're bound to find some who look like they could even be from Africa. Then look at the middle-class Indians in cities and suburbs and in academia/government. Then look at Iranians or Turks or other mid-European/Mediterranean peoples. No coincidence.
