I've been pondering this for a while, having noticed little things before. For example, Greenday has numerous refferences to BDSM and kink in a few of their songs. (Blood, Sex and Booze and something off of Dookie, not to mention King for a Day) Cake seems to make a few refferences every now and then. (Hem is about as blatant as they seem to get as far as I remember) The guys at Penny Arcade flatly pointed out in a strip how it seems like in order to remake an old concept into something else new all you need to do is add semi-lesbian innuendo and some bondagey stuff and you have a hit. (They are currently being sued for the content of that strip, so it is down. Slashdot had an article about it. Google for "Strawberry Shortcake" and you may find a mirrored copy of it)
Anyway, I've just noticed it creeping into mainstream stuff more and more as less of a "weird" thing and more of a unique but accepted sort of thing, at a surprising rate. Anybody notice anything else like this?
