Is ATT Mobile Share Plans the only thing available for new customers?

The ATT mobile share plan is expensive and has unlimited talk. That is the only thing I see on the ATT website. But I don't need unlimited talk. I could have sworn they used to have a separate 300min/month plan and you can add data separately to it.

What the hell? This is terrible.

I'm paying $70 / month for $39.99 plan + $25 data + $10 texts (some corporate discount kicks in). So if I ever decided to switch out and switch back I'd have to pay more?

I blame phone subsidies. It's finally catching up to the phone companies that they need to somehow pay for those $600 phones.

Edit: Some slightly comforting news is the fact that if you go unsubsidized, you save $15/month. That's not nearly enough though because the prices are still pretty damn high (http://www.engadget.com/2013/12/05/att-mobile-share-changes/)

Edit 2: Doing some math right now, but if I pay $70 / month, that's $25 more than Straight Talk, and $15 more than AIO, which translates into $600 more per year or $360 if I choose AIO. Netting $400 per iPhone sale is barely enough to cover AIO and not enough to cover Straight Talk. I should definitely be switching... Unfortunately I have another 22 months left on my contract. Woohoo.

If you don't need a lot of data, you should consider ST using an AT&T SIM. Would get you the same coverage with unlimited voice and text and 2.5GB of highspeed data for $50/mo.

Oh crap. I just got an ATT iPhone 5s as a gift. It has delayed activation so I can pick a plan. If I don't pick a plan from ATT they will charge full price for the phone.

I need 4gb data so with the Mobile Share it is $110

Wow. I am paying $70 per month for unlimited data and 450 mins ($65 after discount and taxes) with the old 200 message plan. The 4GB would cost $110 per month, holy crap @#%

Ah, that's a bummer. But, yeah, that's what you're looking at.

Yeah, I switched off the unlimited plan the first time I was throttled.

I would save so much money with ST. I haven't used more than 2.5GB of data in a year.

But I get close some months, and some days I hammer it, so I am terrified of ST booting me.

They don't boot anymore. They clarified their "unlimited" data policy. From now on, you'll definitely only get throttled once you hit 2.5GB's. Not cancelled.

I was happy with my $30/month Tmobile 100min talk and 5GB@4G plan using my Galaxy Nexus.

Goddamn ATT.

Goddamn ATT.

Pay the person whom gave it to you the remainder of the phone. It would basically be the same as them giving you a gift card for some $ off.

Though you'd need to get it unlocked as well. You could always activate service, then cancel a month later and pay the etf. You'd be looking at $110 + taxes, $36 activation fee and $350 ETF. Would run you about the same but without having to involve the person whom bought it for you. You'd make that back up on your $30/mo plan in a few months.

So I guess the answer to how much you really are paying per month for that subsidized AT&T phone was $15 a month.

My current grandfathered AT&T plan is 450 mins/2 GB/1000 texts. My total is $75 before taxes and fees. My final bill is usually $83. I'm currently not part of a FAN discount but that might change in the near future. I stupidly gave up unlimited data years ago to save $5 a month because I wasn't clearing 1 GB a month during my 3G days.

If I was a new AT&T customer wanting similar service and signing a contract I'd be paying $95 a month before taxes and fees. If I didn't sign a contract (off-contract price of AT&T phone or bring your own phone) I'd be paying $80 a month.

Unless I have a great FAN discount next summer when my contract is up, I'm planning on switching over to GoPhone. $60 a month, before taxes and fees, for unlimited talk and text and 2 GB a month. I feel like AT&T is inadvertently making GoPhone more attractive with each passing day.
