ok, i was talking with a buddy of mine today, and we got to talking about a theoretical "string" in space that was so dense, a piece of this "string" only a couple of miles long would outweigh earth. is this possiable? do i even have the right name? i dont have a scientists IQ, but i love science. so if anybody knows, could you please help me and explain this? thanks

This beast is called a "cosmic string," and is thought to be a left-over from the creation of the universe. Of course, this beast is only a flight of fancy. From what I understand, somebody proposed that this MIGHT be able to exist. This, of course, assumes that the physics theories are 100% correct, and that we have a good handle on the conditions around when the universe was created. Both of these are rather weak, IMHO. So I doubt that they exist.

But they were featured in an episode of Star Trek (TNG, I believe). But Star Trek has a history of taking valid scientific points and screwing them up.
