Is ATI planning on releasing a .13 micron 9800pro?

First TSMC screws over nVidia now ATi. I think they should both drop TSMC completely and get their chips from IBM or maybe Intel (if they were willing to do that sort of thing).
 
There are not a whole lot of choices for fab less companies these days. IBM does not have the wafer capacity of TSMC and Intel is NOT a foundry, so their fabs/processes are not available to outside chip designers.
 
Well it looks like .13 micron chips isn't as easy to produce as one thinks, no? I think its kinda weird though considering its been over a year and yeilds still suck...then again its probably a lot harder if we think about it...
 
Nah, it's probably not too hard... take a chunk of metal and really little chisel and go to work, you'll be at .13 in no time... Oh, and make sure you have good lighting.
 
I think its an option for them, should they run into problems with their next chipset for the fall. Really though, I think they'll just move onto a new card with the .13 micron unless it can give them a large benefit for higher clock speeds which it should...
 
I was under the impression, that ATIs next performance card, the R360, would be a higher clocked 9800pro on a 0.13nm process, to allow higher clock speeds.
 
i don't understand............... since ATI is now friends of Intel............ and Intel is properbly the best at 0.13 ( Since Northwood Is produce in 0.13 )

Then if Intel produce ATI chips, doesn't that help intel as well since they can then quickly abondon 0.13 fabs and move on to 0.09, while fabs still using 0.13 could produce ATI graphics chip............

Just a few thoughts.
1) Intel and ATi friends? What does this mean?😕
2) Intel will continue to use its 130nm capacity through the rest of 2004, at least.
3) Intel is the best at the 130nm node for producing their own microprocessors using their own proprietary tools. TSMC, IBM, Chartered, etc have to deal with dozens of chips from other companies.
4) Intel tried the foundry route some time ago. I'm not sure what became of it. Obviously, they dropped the service, but I'm not sure why.
 
ATI and Intel have some license agreements. That hardly constitutes a "friend". VIA had an Intel license for a while, then decided they didn't want to pay it any more. No more friends. Nvidia and Microsoft had "agreements", I don't think anyone is calling THEM friends either.

Exactly. AFAIK, their cross licensing agreement was meant to kill the pending the patent infringements suits against each other. Considering ATi is selling desktop chipsets with support for a 800mhz FSB and faster integrated video, that makes them Intel's competitor, and you don't give a competitor an inside track to something so invaluable to your business model. Intel is in a fortunate position to actually have the money to research and develop their own die processes. If you look at the rest of the industry, you'll see collaborations from all sorts of companies in an attempt to spread out the costs of each success node.
