Is ATI 8500 a decent gaming card?

JulesMaximus

No Lifer
My wife's system is a P4 2.4GHz 533MHz FSB with 512MB RAM and an ATI 8500DV video card. I'm certain it will run games like UT2k3 but how much eye candy should I expect from this rig? The reason I ask is I may have a friend of mine over to do some online gaming and I'll need to load up UT2k3 on this machine.

Also, how would play be over a wireless network?

Same Jmaximus from VIA Arena?

Anyhoo, yeah the 8500 is pretty equivalent to a Ti 4200. Just be sure to get the 128 MB LE version.

It is a 128MB version. Has all kinds of input/outputs and even came with a remote control.

No, not Jmaximus. I play online when I can find the time and I'm okay, not great at it, but it is great fun. I can't even tell you what my online name is. Some variation on Jules or something I'm sure.

The 8500 is MORE than adequate for the kind of gaming you are talking about doing.

I still have an 8500 in my main rig (3200+ barton) and it runs everything great.

I can't have ALL the eye candy on, but most of it at 1024 x 768 in UT 2K3

I'm thinking of upgrading it soon, but only because I want to put it in my wifes machine (She loves UT2K3)

Anyway. it will do you just fine for some time to come.

I agree with this statement, I use a 8500 64mb DDR (original version) with my 1800+ and I love it. I can still play all the latest games at 1024x768 with most or all details turned to highest (but no AA or Ansio enabled) Just a list of the games that run fine on my slower than normal system

Homeworld 2 (smooth)
Jedi Academy (smooth except when these cloaking dudes appear, then I get momentary jumpy)
UT 2003 (smooth)
BF 1942 (smooth)
Americas Army (smooth)
RTCW, C&C Generals, Unreal 2, etc... all smooth

As you can see, most new games will work fine. All these were running at 1024x768 with all detals set at least to high if not highest. This card will NOT be adequate for Half-Life 2 if you want any of the nice effects enabled, but for now it works fine. I am keeping this baby till Christmas when I will look at the 9600 pro or one of the newer cards availble (I am hopeing new releases of cards will drive the 9700 pro or 9800 pro prices down, but that is a long shot)

The 8500DV memory is clocked much slower than 8500 and even 8500LE cards, IIRC. That said, your system should be more than satisfactory for UT2K3 at 8x6 or even 10x7 with medium details. My 64MB 9100 (=8500LE) and XP1700+/512MB plays well at those settings, so your setup should play better, considering you have a faster CPU and more video card RAM. The 8500DV's slower memory speed shouldn't really matter at 8x6.

Wireless gaming should be even better than over the internet play over a cable modem. Cable modems typically run anywhere from 1 Mbit to 8Mbits peak.
Wirless 802.11b runs at 11 Mbits. 802.11g runs somewhere around 56 Mbits. Even if you had a low or weak signal of 2-3 Mbits, it should still play with a near zero ping rate over your LAN.

I'm no Radeon expert, but I think you should be fine with your 8500. 64MB version might cripple UT2003 a little bit. You may have to turn down some features but nothing drastic. If you have 128 your in great shape IMO.

Radeon 8500 is an adaquate gaming card. It will play pretty much anything out right now with decent performance. You might need to lower some settings on the most recent games such as Halo, but it will definately be good enough if you're not picky.

8500 is a good card i had the 64mb le version, ran things rather well consdiering

the 4200 is better i think, not hugely though. i had a 8500le and it played most recent games just fine with med-high details at 1024x768 (max payne, rtcw, jedi outcast, C&C generals )

3d mark 2001 looks good, but i cant remap the controls so i cant figure out how to play 🙁

I disagree. The 8500DV isn't a "decent" card by todays standards as it has screwed up AA/AF, and is slower than GF4 4400/4600, GF FX 5800s, GF FX 5600s, GF FX 5900s, Radeon 9500/9600/9700/9800s. If your card has about 10 cards better than it, p.u.

hmmm..., I can't get those results with my P4 1.6 @ 2.4ghz, 512mb ddr ram at 375mhz, and Geforce 4 ti4200 128mb @ 300/560. I can't get smooth in 1280x1024 for homeworld 2 or generals or bf1942 (runnin hi detail), but i can't get 1024 x 768 silky smooth either. Is it the geforce 4 or the P4?

My XP1700+ and 64MB 9100 (8500LE) is relatively smooth (~50-60fps) at 10x7 w/16xAF with the BF1942 demo. To reach that "fluidity" with UT2K3 or Wolfenstein: ET, I need to bump it down to 8x6, and maybe disable an effect or two.

ITS THE P4 .. !!!!!! 🙂 your P4 1.7Ghz Overclocked too 2.4Ghz is as fast as an Old model Thunderbird Athlon 1.3Ghz Your using a P4 from the time when they sucked more then a vacume 🙂 Change your Motherboard and CPU too a 2500+ and Nforce2 System or P4 2.4Ghz 800FSB system and watch those games run fine !! 100+ FPS ... trust me your using a crippled CPU it doesnt matter how much you overclock it ! ..... Geforce4 Ti4200 .. rocks !

The 8500 is still decent for most games at 1024 x 768 @ medium details but you should probably start thinking upgrading within the next few months or so as the card simply won't cut it for the likes of Doom III and Half Life 2.

Thats yet to be seen.

I dont really find 9800 pro performance all that compelling either.

Its the P4

You want a good cheap upgrade?

Soltek NV400 Single channel nforce 2 (if you fanboys dont think it competes well with dual check the reviews) 76$ shipped
Retail 2500+ barton 90$ shipped

This setup OC's the barton to 3200+ for me. STOCK cooling, NO votage adjustment 512 mb crucial pc 2700

I don't think he needs to upgrade his entire PC for a weekend of gaming. It'll be fine for his friend.

That Soltek + Barton combo is cheap 'n fast, though. I paid about the same money for a single-channel nF1 and Pally XP1700+ last November, albeit with (eye-rending) integrated video.

Well I DO have a T-bred B 1800+ @ 2.3ghz in my bros rig (up in college) on a nforce 2 that has a ti4200@ over ti4600 speeds. And in my other rig I got a cheap $60 ECS and 1800+ combo, which I got up to 2.1ghz on stock voltage on the ECS K7S5A board @ 150mhz fsb with a geforce 3 ti200. Is it worth swapping around?
