From 9to5Mac

We just got a tip that Apple is planning on dropping the prices again on the iPhone and iPod line within the next month or two - perhaps at the late February event. Our tipster says that Apple will drop the prices $100 on both the iPod Touch and iPhone lines.
Also, the 8Gb iPod Touch will be dropped from the lineup according to the source. It would also make sense that the 8Gb iPhone would get phased out as well, but it wasn't mentioned in the tip. Inventories will likely be a big factor in the timing so we're keeping an eye out for shortages.
The price drops are likely to make some price spacing for the newer 3G iPhones that are expected to drop later this year - perhaps with the tablets.
The price cuts will also likely spur on iPhone sales which have either been good or bad depending on the week and the source.
Prices on RAM have been plummeting significantly since the current pricing model was revealed to mixed reactions in September - six months ago. Also, admittedly inferior devices like the 32GB Creative Zen have been dropping in price ($299). While not really comparable to the iPod or iPhone, it does illustrate the falling prices of RAM - the only differentiator between iPod and iPhone models.
No specifics were given but the iPod Nano line might also be the beneficiary of decreased memory pricing and might see capacities double in size.
The new prices are expected to be:
8Gb iPod Touch $199 8Gb iPhone - $299 --- BOTH DEAD
16Gb iPod Touch $299 16Gb iPhone - $399
32Gb iPod Touch $399

So effectively, rather than a price increase for the new models, they would just replace the old models at the same price point. I'm sure some will be tiffed if it happens to soon after the release just weeks before, but I don't think we will see the same level of disgust among the community.

I was actually kind of surprised that they didn't do that. They did exactly this when they updated the Nanos, this past year. Before, it was a 4GB Nano for $199, now it is an 8GB Nano.

An 8-gig iPhone for $299 would send sales through the roof!

I dunno, my wife has a crackberry. The only thing it tops the iPhone in is price and email

I can't stand the control mechanism or the UI on the Crackberry. That may be because I am already used to verizon's cocked way of doing things though... Gah, i am not looking forward to when my contract is up... i have way too much to decide.

Wait... are we still on about an Apple tablet?

If this is a rumor that relies on an Apple tablet to be released around the same time, I'm not going to be holding my breath.

There shouldn't be too much of a backlash. We all know that new gadgets and devices come out all the time, which make older devices drop in value. It's something that goes with the territory of buying tech.

I agree. The iphone has been out long enough now that a price drop wouldn't be unheard of.

Having just bought a 16gb iphone I can't say I would be too happy about it.

This is my first post with the iPhone. Not too bad in my opinion. I am still trying to find the best typing method.

Apple recommends the "Finger Typing iMethod," but personally I prefer placing it on a flat, desk-like surface and operating it with my forehead.

I'll be switching to AT&T this summer, and I think a 3G iPhone is in my future for later this year. Or at least a cheaper one.
