Is Apple dead if/when Steve Jobs dies?

Crazy yes... As long as idiots(and the uninformed) follow mindlessly, Apple should do alright.

I'm sure it'll hit their stock price, but they should otherwise keep going as they have.

It's stupid to think that the company and it's vision/strategy is all about one person.

Steve Jobs is the Eternal Leader of Apple.

He will never die, he will just continue to replace any failing parts with those harvested from innocents.

Normally I would agree, but steve jobs almost single handily brought Apple back to prosperity and sustained it's profitability for many years.

Yeah, Steve Jobs is an incredible visionary and I think Apple won't be able to continue the innovative pace and keep their marketshare if he's gone.

I didn't think he believed in user-replaceable parts at all until he got his liver transplant.

They'll be all right for a year or so since things are in the pipeline, but it'll take an amazing leader to take the reigns.

Well at least we won't have press conferences of Jobs lying about everything and no more articles about Jobs saying how dumb his customers are.

agree. the way the company is set up, it would take a major cultural change (tons of secrecy) as well. the last time steve jobs left the company it had a slow decline, so not a stretch to assume it would do the same again.

Steve Jobs has the 24 billion in cash that Apple has in a lock box. He's the only with the secret password to the lock box. If he dies, Apple is broke.

What kind of stupid question is this?

Apple knows what an influence Jobs is and you can bet they're trying to cultivate new people to take his place. The only problem is I can't name a single other Exec from Apple other than Jobs. I guess you could consider Ives, but he doesn't seem like the inspirational leader that Apple needs.

slow death, resort to rehashing old ideas, and failed attempts at new ideas before it finally implodes.. This is the direction Microsoft is going in and has been going in for a long time now.

Actually I feel that MS products have improved significantly over the last 3-5 years. Xbox360, Zune (while not a economic success, it's widely considered to be a solid device), Windows 7, Office 07.

I realize it's a lot of opinion, but MS's trend lately is upwards and not downwards IMO.

I agree with this. MS has improved a lot in recent years.

Apple is the Van Halen of the computer/consumer electronics industry; with the right frontman, they're awesome. There are some amazingly smart people working there, and I hope that when the time comes they can find the right person to carry on the vision.

The guy who designed the iPhone joined up a few years before Steve came back. Steve promoted the guy and that's what happened. Apple isn't about just Steve, there are people in upper management making it all happen. If anything, losing Steve could potentially be a good thing if they get a decent CEO in there. The guy is an ass.

But very few are able to guide with such a powerful hand. Its steves way or the highway... other execs would just focus groups sh*t to death and cover their ass.
