Is anyone using a 3870X2 on an X48 board?

I've given up on the 3870X2 and this chipset. Both boards I've used are very similar (DFI LP LT48 and DFI LP UTX48) and both have the same issue.

The system can render and crunch day in and day out yet going to a random site with java or flash can and often does cause it to freeze. It's a strange freeze too as the number lock on the keyboard still toggles with a delay. CTRL+ALT+DEL does not work. If a sound is playing it will stop and go cha-cha-cha about every three seconds. A reset of the system is the only remedy. All with Vista Ultimate X64.

Both 8800U and 9800GTX do NOT exhibit this behavior at all.

i had a similar problem with a 3870x2 on my p35 chipset except the screen would just go black. still hear sounds, but i'd have to reboot it. i sold it to somebody on this board and he's had no problems. guess my computer just likes nvidia.

The driver assumed that some functionality worked one way, when it didn't. This will be fixed in cat 8.6 already, but it's not clear that this is the problem.

ATI think they might have the x38/x45 chipset problems with crossfire fixed in the 8.6 driver

I suppose this is ATi Vista bugs. I have had this problem with 7.x driver on my laptop's ATi IGP. The screen is completely unreadable after booting into windows for 10 mins, the system is running, its just that something when wrong with the graphic, there's nothing i can do except reset. Rolling back to older version helped. I do have nViDiA chipset problem until Vista SP1, explorer kept crashing with nViDiA drivers.

Problems between chipsets and Graphics cards are often due to a conflict with the BIOS (I am referring to rare instances where pci-e 2.0 cards are incompatible with 1.0 boards when they should be) that can be alleviated with an up to date BIOS (however you're specific problem gives weight to a software problem). Given it is a dual GPU card and you tested single GPU cards and they were fine- this is a possibility. Another thing should be noted is that people do run X2's with X48's so there has to be something up with you're specific config. I would first ensure you remove previous drivers properly (with Guru3d Driversweeper), ensure you are running an up to date Bios and ensure the applications you listed are also up to date.

Interesting. I'll have to try it again with 8.6.

All of the above has been met back and forth. The problem happens with XP as well. There's a hardware issue as the system will not "warm boot" (hangs with post code 26) if the PCI-E clock is < 105MHz. That's a conflict between the ARC 1680ix-24 and 3870X2 as it goes away if booting with just the 3870X2. The system was run with just a single SATA drive (no areca host) and it still had the freezing issue however.

I face the same dillema. I have both the x48 board and the ATI 3870 x2 card. The system can run fine for a whole day or crash within minutes of start up. Whether surfing the net or playing QW all seems fine until (GASP!) I hear the ATI fan running wild! Then the system reboots by itself.

I run stock clock, defaulted all the settings and still same problem. I can understand if I was trying to run COD4, but overheat while watching a vid? OMG! Death by YouTube!

Seriously if any1 has found an answer please post. if I find it first I'll definitely share it with you. Many thx.

BTW

Intel x48board, Intel 9650 Extreme 3Ghz, 4G 1600Mhz OCZ ram, 4 x 250 WD SATA HDD, 2 x Xerox 19" WIdescreen, OCZ 1010w PSU, Master Cooler "Cosmos" case.

there is a thread addressing these issues for the DFI boards on their forums you might want to check out. I haven't checked back there in the last couple of months but they might have worked throught a solution specific to your boards.
