i'm reducing the sound of my case by lowering my 2x 80mm fans to 5 volts & also lowering the 2 fans on my cpu to 5 volts. is this safe as i'd only switch them to 5 volts while browsing & desktop work. when i play games i'll switch them all back to 12 volts. i think it should be ok if the cpu goes up a couple of degrees c. my temps a currently room temp: 24c case temp: 25c cpu temp: 31c

let me know how much your temp went up on the cpu running it at 5 volts.

7volts would probablt be ok too, 5volts undercuts the fan's output by __A__LOT__, both in noise and CFM. Some fans won't even start spining on 5volts.

I ran my YS Tech 60mm fans at 7V and that was really good, you might try 7 Volts first. With the CPU running RC5, temperature was about 6F cooler at 12V than at 7V, according to my BP6.

Check this site for a really nice 12v to 7v switching system. You can simplify it if you want, the leds are just eye candy, and a single switch can be used to control several fans, if it can handle the current. Be sure to use a dpdt sw. (center off) rather than a dpst sw.(no center position) to avoid potential problems. You want the 7v/off/12v dual led baybus article, it has a schematic.
