Do you guys consider Buddhism more of a religion or more of a philosophy?

I see that it is commonly considered to be both, but what do you guys think?

I'm a Buddhist sympathizer. Imo, it can be either. Practiced incorrectly it's a religion.

Alright so I did a bit more of reading into this. Apparently it is considered a nontheistic religion. In a western sense, Buddhism wouldn't be considered a religion because there isn't a deity associated with it.

However, it would be considered a religion to some people because it is a conglomerate of beliefs, ideologies, and philosophies.

I guess that is how I took it in.

Anyone want to chime in more?

I am a lay Daoist which is really similar. Some treat Buddhism and Taoism as a full religion forsaking all other deities but many more use them as philosophical and spiritual Guides for their journeys to Nirvana.

Learn to relax and you will be half way there.

I've been to a few Buddhist temples in Thailand.

I was never allowed in though. :(

I find it interesting that countries that are predominantly Buddhists apply the golden rule much better than Christians. While both have similar views on premarital sex, the former has much more success in practice without the threat of eternal damnation in hell.

when you're in constant contact with other cultures/beliefs you're forced to be more tolerant just simply to get along with everyone else. Look at all the US cities with major trading seaports. When you're culturally isolated like many parts of the South, your culture becomes stagnant, you don't know how to deal with people of different cultures/beliefs so naturally your first reaction to it is suspicion. This is of course speaking in average.

i used to take a light view on buddhism until i realized that it's just as full of shit as every other religion out there.

for those who think buddhism is being nice to people and smiling, you're the equivalent of every atheist anywhere.
for everyone else, just go to wikipedia and read some of the stuff.
