In the beginning, there was Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, released on September 30, 1999 for the original Playstation. It was a great game, and the future looked bright. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 improved on the formula, and was much better than the original. It was released just a year later on September 20, 2000.
Fast forward to a new platform, the PS2. Just another year later, Tony Hawk 3 was released on October 30, 2001. Ok, it has better graphics and bigger levels. It also supports online play, although only 1% of the gaming population actually played online, seeing as to how the official PS2 online adapter doesn't release till almost a year later, and in order to get online required an expensive external USB modem.
However, Activision and Neversoft thought we needed more, so they released Tony Hawk 4 on October 23, 2002. By this time, I was over the series, as it had become stale. Each new release introduced one more "trick" that could continue series of tricks into millions of points. Whoopdy-do.
I suppose they figured that people were starting to get "Rocky" syndrome with the increasing numbers after the game, so they decided to rename the game so as to be able to start back at one. Afterall, a lot of the stupid gamers will think it's an entirely new game, and eat it up. Tony Hawk's Underground was born, or THUG for short. This is the when the series began to get completely retarded, and wasn't about skating anymore. It was released on October 27, 2003. Not surprisingly, THUG2 was released just a year later, on October 4, 2004. This is the point that I began rolling my eyes everytime a new Tony Hawk was announced at E3.
This year, it's no different. Instead of going all the way to 4 with the Undergrond tag in the name, they've decided to start again from one, announcing Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Same game as the previous 6, only NEW and IMPROVED. Jesus christ. When is it scheduled for release? October 18, 2005.
So that's one new game each year for the past 7 years kids. It will now outpace the NFL2K series. While this annoys the crap out of me, I'm sure some of you will disagree with my position that they need to give the series a rest and try to innovate a little bit on it, instead of rehashing the same crap over and over.
And I haven't even mentioned all consoles combined. This was just the PSone and PStwo timeline. According to IGN's game search, there have been (includes the unreleased Wasteland) a total of 40 Tony Hawk games over 14 platforms. From the PC to the DC to the DS, they are all covered. I didn't include games that came up in the search without a review, so there have actually been 49 that have been somewhere in existance at some point of time, whether they were followed through with or not.
Being that I'm not making money off any of this (and if I was, I'd be all for it), I can rightfully say give it a rest. I used to love this series, and I remember playing Tony Hawk 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast until bedtime, some friends and I battling it out for the highest scores. I picked up Tony Hawk 3 on the PS2, because it promised better gameplay (which was to be argued with). I owned Tony Hawk 4 only because it was purchased at a discount from a friend. I probably played it a total of 30 minutes, and I have since shunned the entire series. I absolutely hate it now, and I'm mad at Activision for shoving it down my throat.
It is 10:30am on a Sunday morning, and I'm bored. You may discuss now.
