Well first off I am not an alcoholic
I started having problems with depression a long time ago and gave up drinking
No antidperessant or psychiatirc drug helped me
Since I have started drinking again on a consistent basis I am much happier, I am never an angry drunk - I dont see any downsides at this point
I never really get drunk per say I just drink 5 to 6 drinks per day
I dont need it to socialize it just changes my mood and when I wake up the next day after drinking I acually feel better than if i didtn have a drink the night before
ANd I am the happiest I have been in my whole life
Opinions?

Well, you can never drive again.
You'll destroy your liver.
You'll gain weight.

Seek professional help...not asking a bunch of geeks at a computer forum!!

5-6 drinks a day is a lot probably a sign on alcoholism...

to prevent this, I pour doubles

seriously though, if you cannot be happy without alcohol, you have a problem

Yeah, that many drinks a day is not good...and freakin expensive!! How do you afford that EVERY day? Even at shots, you'll go through a $20 liter rather quickly.

Someone that consistently needs alcohol to make themselves feel better is definitely an alcoholic...and to quote Finding Nemo:

"INTERVENTION!" ;)

This post blows my mind

He never said he was bonging beers and driving
Liver gets destroyed from many things
Won't make him gain any more weight than a value meal at mcdonalds

I'm a happy drunk. I drink about 4-5 times a week... take off monday and wednesday since i have class the next morning. I average about 2 30 packs a week. 1 on weekends 1 during the week. You only live once, why not live it to the fullest.

Edit... How can he afford it? 5 drinks a day works out to less than $20 a week. Less than filling up his gas tank a week. *that is going off $15 for a 30 pack bud light or similar

5-6 beers a day.. it depends on when he drinks it. Does he drink it all at once to get drunk or does he drink it and spread it out so that it lasts all day?

No, that's a logical and rational solution to an obvious problem. This is ATOT, remember? That is contrary to forum philosophy which is to debate the issue into oblivion, with morons grouping together on one side, the few rational folks on the other, finally ending up in a flamefest and a ban or two for good measure.

ehh. it's all relative. If you get to sleep conciously, and wake up pleasantly, there's not much of a problem.

personally, I have a few glasses of scotch after dinner. It makes it easier to let go of inane work issues and it helps me get to sleep at a reasonable hour. As long as you don't throw a fit when you're running on fumes, you're probably fine.

I definitely have red wine every day. Not 5-6 glasses mind you! But a glass in the evening when the rugrat's asleep. I find it very relaxing.

I think you could consider it a problem when you can't say no to it. Like if someone said, don't drink anything today and you physically could not do it.

As long as it's not affecting your day to day activities, or the people around you, and you're not drinking and driving, I don't see it as a problem.

Well, the best words that anyone said on this subject is... DONT GO DOWN THAT ROAD!

First off, you mentioned that you had a problem with depression, then stated that-after nothing happened with prescriptions-that you went back to moderate drinking. Well, ALCOHOL is a depressent. Sure you may feel happy now, or in the morning, but look at the big picture.... years down the road (IF you follow this road) the situation will change... your tolerance level for alcohol will increase, and all of a sudden those 5-6 drinks turn into 12!! AND it is amazing that you awake 'refreshened' after drinking because drinking to any moderate extreme over time RUINS your sleep pattern. Over a period of time after regular drinking you just dont dream anymore!

I consider myself a 'functional alcoholic'. I drink about 12 drinkds a day, but I started with the same 5-6 drinks like you. I can still keep a full time job, never be late, never call in sick, pass all drug tests, etc. But, in looking back in my life, I wish I never started drinking! In the long run it is going to take some toll in your life.

The most common prescription for depression is exercise and eating the right foods. You should try those, before alcohol. Take it from me!!
