Is anybody watching the live debate on West Wing?

My dad likes this show so we're watching it with him, and it amuses me how the show is set up to make the republican senator look bad. I'm republican, and the design of the debate is nicely done so that the democratic senator looks more self posessed, makes clearer points (no comment on better, since it is fiction and I don't know the background on the fictional characters). It absolutely has to be deliberate orchestration, since Alan Alda is a terrific actor, and if he wanted to appear to dominate and win the debate, that's how it would look.

[edit] Seems to me like they made it more balanced towards the middle and actually gave the stronger close to the republican.

I have a feeling they're going to have Jimmy Smits win so they can keep several staffers.

Don't rock the boat. The left likes to live in their little fantasy world so if this gives them their fantasy - so be it.

Its real life too. Kerry owned Georgie in all of the three debates pretty handily. Too bad most Americans were too busy watching reality TV and being scared of Saddam to pay any attention.

I watched the earlier Easten feed, and I didn't get that at all. Each looked strong at some times, flustered and cornered at others. Each hit the other in areas where their party agendas are traditionally vulnerable. I thought it was pretty balanced, with no decisive winner.

They are live performances, so perhaps the two performances are significantly different.

Grow up. All you do is bleat propaganda points. Same goes for ntdz. Mindless attacks against anything other than your BushCo party line.

Interestingly enough, they're evening it out a bit now. The participants seem pretty equal in the strength and presentation of their arguments. I'm wondering if they'll flip it around for the end of the debate.

 Grow up and find someone else to whine about. All you do is run around like a spoiled baby and whine about what you think others are doing. Why don't you address what they are saying instead of trying to flippantly dismiss it? Do you really think leftists don't dream and wish the West Wing was reality? Get a grip junior, try reality for once.

They're replaying the live recording for the west coast now, so it's interesting to hear your perspective, having seen the whole thing. The beginning was definitely in favor of the dem candidate, but it's balanced, or maybe even right leaning now.

That could be it. I do remember the Smits character taking an early offensive.

By the way, as I understand it, both feeds are live, i.e., they're acting the whole show twice. If so, I'm sure someone will soon post an article comparing the two performances. Maybe Smits is stronger in the second show.

Fluff off, Sir SoG. Once again, you should follow your own good advice. I did address what they were saying; you're the one who "flippantly dismiss[ed]" it with your insipid talking-point jab about "fantasy world".

It's only a flesh wound. ROFL!

HAHAHA!!! "Fluff off"? Awww, did someone work themself into a tizzy?
No, my comment was about how the left likes to use these sorts of things as their alter-reality. Do you really think leftists don't dream and wish the West Wing was reality?

Keep whining junior, it's hilarious.

Well, they're wrapping up the debate and it looks like they decided to give Alda the stronger closing statement. So, in my eyes, the west coast version went from dem favored, to even, to republican favored. I do wonder how it contrasts with the earlier version.

That sounds similar. I also thought Alda had an especially strong closing, perhaps why I came away with an impression of overall balance.

On a related note, it would be fantastic if they did debates like that in real life. Force the candidates away from their canned talking points, push back when they evade the question, make them acknowledge the holes in their claims and explain how they'll address them. Fat chance, of course.

First debate - Kerry stomped his ass.

Second debate - Kerry beat him but not as bad. (So Republicans consider that a win.)

Third debate - Kerry stoped his ass again.

Just because Bush floundered badly doesn't mean that Kerry impressed.

Earlier version? I saw the same thing here on the east coast as you did on the west coast (i believe). I thought it kinda swung from dem to repub at the end.
All in all I thought it was extrememly fair and very interesting.
I would like to see this kind of debate, with extended time at least 4-5 times in every Presidential election.

If that were to happen a man like Bush would never get elected President.

NTDZ, ShadesofGrey,

Perhaps, you should actually watch the show before replying next time. I'm not sure why the op felt the way he did, but most people I know (and that includes the conservatives thought it was very balanced). The Republican candidate is very impressive this time wich is a nice change from the previous time they did an election. The republican in that election was a joke. This time, however, they make the republican candidate as apealing as the democratic candidate.

I (and you should too) hope they do more shows like this on TV. It might actually put pressure on our real candidates to hold a real debate instead of the scripted junk we normally see.

I don't waste my time watching TV, but if I did, I sure wouldn't watch some fantasy political show. It's funny how some people look at the West Wing and believe it or believe that it should be true. It's a TV show, it's not real, it is written by people. People have this nasty habit of letting their own bias and views spill into their work. I haven't watched the show, nor do I want to, but I wouldn't be surprised if it starts to look like activism. There is a thread on here about Medicare for everyone, that was spawned from that show, so it looks like some people can't quite seperate reality from fantasy.

Just pointing out the relevant info. It seems the left needs this fantasy world to help them with their politics. As you have seen, there are now atleast one thread that has taken something from the fantasy TV show and tried to suggest it be implemented. Kinda sad that people look to fantasy for their politics.
