I have heard people say that they are afirad of Nuclear power and I want tp know why? It is very safe, in fact the two major malfunctions were both caused by human error, if the plants had been allowed to operate as they were designed the meltdown would never have happened. The danger is relatively low, and the waste can be easily desposed of by sending it deep into the bowels of the earth where it came from in the first place. SO whats the problem? Just wondering.

Why are people afraid of flying but dont worry for a second about driving (which is statistically more dangerous)?

1. Plane accidents are big news since they are rare and generallly involve multiple deaths.
2. People drive every day but fly occasionally
3. In case a plan crashes, you think you have 0 chance of survial as opposed to car where you still have a shot.

Nukes vs Fossil Fuels

1. Nuke accidents are such huge events that they become part of "recorded history"
2. People trust their burned coal, but they have never use Nuke Power
3. A nuke Explosion would affect a much larger area that a coal fire

You US guys should just switch to Can-du reactors.
They rock :D
CANADA! CANADA! CANADA!

hehehe no seriously though....Nuclear reactors are quite safe as long as they are run properly (the Can-du reactors are slightly safer...but as long as the plants are run properly it really doesn't matter).

Nothing wrong with the plants, its just the waste that I am afraid of.

Do you know that the waste from the Nuclear Recycling plant in Sellafield is going to make the north atlantic a wasteland, the waste from it is killing the fish and if it doesnt kill the fish it makes it unfit for consumption.

If we can someday figure out how we can get energy with nuclear power without making huge steam engines then I might consider it safe.

Nope, im sure the world has figured out how to make it work safely. And as long as we dont have any Chernobol veterns or homer simpson running it, we'll be fine.

I don't understand why they don't just drop the waste dwon old dry oil wells. I mean that is where the stuff came from anyway deep down in the earth why not just put it back there?

Not afraid at all of nuclear power.

Though I'm concerned about the corporations that might run own and run these some day. With perhaps more conservative legislators and/or judicial people elected or appointed in the future.....what protections would the citizens have?

The power itself can be generated and delivered safely. But when mixed with high pressure American-style capitalism (at an extreme).....how well will profits and safety co-exist?

I think there's risk of groundwater contanimation of you just drop it down wells. Remember, the half-life of this stuff is in the milions of years (+/-), it's highly toxic for a very long period of time.

Vladimir Putin is about to sign a bill in Russia which will make it the "International Repository" for nuclear waste. Let's ship our stuff there.

Of course the Soviet Union/Russia couldn't care less about pollution, look at all the nuclear waste and subs that they scuttled at one of their bases in the artic circle. Can't remember which base but I saw some pics a year or two ago of all these barrels of nuke waste and dozens of nuke subs that they had just opened the hatches on and let sink into the mud because they didn't have the $ to maintain them anymore.

If you put them deep in dry oil wells then seal it off (maybe cap the well with concret of some other substance) no water should ever go anywhere near it
