It keeps trying to connect to update, but nothing is coming through. Anyone else?

Yes, antivirus personal just came out with a huge update, 24 MB worth, as they went from version seven to version 8. As it was, antivirus has always put a low server priority
on the freeware personal edition, and given the fact it does nothing for their bottom line in terms of revenue, it a who can blame them, but a 24 MB update has them backlogged beyond all belief.

One can go to their forums and see the protests it has generated. And a more clueless set of moderators are hard to find. But IMHO, they create their own problems, because if all 24 MB can't be downloaded, all that has been downloaded is lost and must be redone. So the idiots are spending most of their server resources on aborted connections.

I solved my update problem a week ago, I simply went to major geeks.com, and downloaded the update as a 21 MB zip file. Using a resuming download manager so that even if the download is interrupted, it resumes from where it left off. Thereafter, one can either leave the dowloaded file in your download directory or burn it to a cd or pen drive. Then one can open avira, go to manual update, navigate to where your antivirus update file is, double click it, no unzipping needed, and the program will update to version 8 with no problems. I did this on June 24, and thereafter the regular daily automatic updates come with no problems.

I know the update file is on major geeks, but major geeks only keeps 3 days of shareware files open on top. If you cannot find it those three days of files, then look on the left
hand side, for search major geeks, put avira updates in the search box, and major geeks will find it for you.

And for that matter you can just download the whole new antivirus 8 from something like filehippo, its the same basic 24 MB size, delete the old version 7 and install the new version 8. Do the required updates and that too will work.

But its going to be many more weeks before regular automatic updates will be able to handle the load, and thats for folks with good internet connections. If you have a suckie connection like I have, you may have to wait forever.

When the going gets tough, the smart find a better way. I hope it helps anyone having these problems.

But gasp in added edit, I note the OP may be trying this on a mac instead of windows, so a different file may be needed. And for a mac, it may be best to just try to download the whole new version 8 program for a mac if you can't find the proper update file.

Huh... I got version 8 back at the end of May. Otherwise, the definitions have been updating fine.

Far be it from me to say you are wrong, or to say you are not one of the few lucky one to get all of the recent avira updates via automatic avira automatic updates, but there are 10 or so version modules, in what amounts to the major avira update which only started on 6/23/08. All have different dates and version numbers. I invite you to compare what I have when I went to about avira after I completed the major 24 MB upgrade on 6/24/08.

Product version 8.1.0.308 5/28/2008
Search engine 8.01.00.59 6/19/2008
Virus definition file 7.00.05.25 6/30/2008
Control Center 8.00.00.27 4/4/2008
Config Center 8.00.00.17 3/4/2008
Luke Filewalker 8.01.02.12 3/18/2008
AntiVir Guard 8.00.01.18 5/31/2008

The biggie update may be the search engine 8.01.00.59 dated 6/19/08.

Oh shit, lxskllr, you are proving to be a slippery fellow and hard to debunk, when IMHO, you should fall down and worship me.

But except for a few minor date discrepancies, you got in May what I got in June. Or so it seems. Maybe I should fall down and worship you.

But perish that thought, its time to really discredit you by asking the real question that separates the men from the boys. Are you one of these honorable rascals who pays for
avira, or or are you a low life freeloader like me who opts for the avira personal version? Those that pay for avira, have had far better results in terms of program updates.

I pay $20 per year for premium. I think it's important to support software companies for quality products. I haven't had a single issue updating. It quickly updates automatically every day, takes just a few seconds. I am very happy with Antivir Premium, for less than $2 per month I know I'm reasonably protected and don't have to think about it.

To Lxskllr,

You confound me at every turn and its super difficult not to love and respect you for it.

But it get sadly very far from my intent in posting a reply to the OP. The fact is and remains, that many many people world wide are having tremendous problems in getting avira updates lately. And the reason is the recent huge 24 MB update as avira transitions from version 7 to version 8. And that problem gets much worse for users with the personal edition and also gets much worse for people like me stuck on dial up. Because if the entire large update does not go through without any connection interruption in the normal automatic avira update process, all that has been previously updated is wasted. The fact that you have been, how should we say it, lucky, does zero for the folks who have not been as lucky.

Which is why I posted this reply, because there are ways to obtain this huge avira update using a resuming download manager. And once the huge update is obtained, the normal and much smaller daily avira updates come through easily.

Exactly right akhilles, regardless if you get the update file from major geeks or directly from avira, the key is to have a file you can get with a resuming download manager. Once you have that entire file, then one can use the manual update option.

Rather than endless trying to get it with the automatic update process and then have it often abort mid way through and then have to start from scratch.

Try going to the Update button on top of the main window, and then select "Start product update". That should work.

Hmm... Maybe try downloading the whole program again, and doing a new install :^/

I'd hate to do that unless i really have to. I'm on dialup here. Anyone know what "filter" means/does?
