I was gonna get an e6400 and not OC it. But then I was thinking.. is it possible to save $40 and OC an e6300 to e6400 levels on stock cooling?

Yes, easily. Stock cooling, stock voltage. There's not much to it.

You could probably safely push an E6300 to 2.4-2.5ish on stock cooling and voltage as well.

if you are not going to overclock a 6400 then a 6300 will easily get to 6400 speeds, however if you are going to overclock something then why not go for the 6400 which can overclock well.

I'd just do the 6300 OC to 6400, just keep mind of energy costs and lower overall lifetime that come with the territory. If you seriously want overclocking, I'd recommend getting a 6600, as higher clock speeds + higher cache mean you can easily reach X6800 speeds.

i have an e6400 that will hit 4ghz, i wouldn't be able to get there with a 6300 because the board maxes before 600, if you are going for a huge OC then get the e6400, otherwise just get the 6300 and put the money toward a video card

On stock cooling, the 6400 and 6300 will max out nearly the same because of temperatures

You can't go wrong with either one. I went with the 6400 because I wanted 400x8-3200, which I achieved with default voltage.

If you really want a conservative overclock then just get a 6300 and go 400x7=2800. Unless you get unlucky you'll be able to achieve that with the stock cooler and default voltage. Just remember you'll need a good motherboard, powersupply, and memory.
