Is an 8800GTS overkill for a 19" LCD monitor (1280x1024)?

I've got an 8800GTS but I'm afraid that I'm not taking fully advantage of the 8800GTS.

If that's the case, can someone directe me towards a video card that could give equal performance at the 1280x1024 resolution to the performance given by an 8800GTS?

Much appreciated advice.

It'd Hold onto it. Especially with games like Supreme Commander, Crysis, STALKER, and others around the corner...

Basically, with the higher quality in games, the 8800GTS will be pushed even at a relatively low resolution such as 1280x1024?

Haha, I'm not planning on selling it.....yet haha.

Your fine. Hold on to it.
AND USE IT.

Wait till games like Crysis comes out.
Then you'll be hugging that 8800GTS.

Overclock that E6600 man. You can reach at least 3.2ghz.. :p
Thats what you should be worrying about right now. Not about your kickass video card, but your processor with so much potential.

If I got an e6300 and overclocked it to 3.4Ghz, relative to the 8800GTS, would my cpu now start being the bottleneck to my system?

The only way I could afford an 8800GTS is if I sell my e6600. If I had the means, I would definitely keep my e6600 but right now I'm selling it off of ebay. For that reason, I haven't overclocked it but it's a recent week and I'm sure someone will notice and bid for it.

Sorry if this sounds rude but the above sentence made me smile. It was just refreshing because most folks here tend to worry about the opposite. :) If anything, I'd suggest you keep the card. 8800 GTS is powerful, yes, but you know the rule - it'll be obsolete (from the top shelf) in less than 6 months.

It won't be overkill for DX10 titles, but in current titles you should probably be driving a higher resolution. In the meantime you can always turn up everything to highest with AA and AF cranked up. 1680x1050 is a pretty good resolution for now and the future for an 8800GTS. I'm a little worried 1920x1200 will stress my 8800GTS in stuff like Crysis (even Oblivion, although I don't own it), at which point I'll probably have to look at SLI or a new card (G80 refresh or R600)

Try Oblivion at 1280x1024 on the gts, and you'll see it's definitely not overkill. You'll be glad you have a gts when even newer, more demanding games come out.

Crank up the IQ and AA and enjoy that for a while.
When the truckload of GPU-killing games arrive this year, you will love it even more.

Does anyone have an 8800GTS running COH and tell me what their avg FPS is on MAX settings?

COH definitely benefits from 8800 series cards. It's one of the most dramatic differences I've experienced by switching from 7 series cards. (like Oblivion) On top of that, COH's memory usage is ridiculous to the point of a memory leak bug. Check out the linked pic.

8 player map at the beginning, max in-game quality settings, 16AF, High Quality

in 1 year it'll be considered mid-low end.
