Is America really as fat as I think?

OK, I've seen this everywhere. Grocery stores, wal-mart, wherever.

But this weekend I was at an amusement park and there was a ride near the entrance so I watched people come in as my daughter went on the ride. I was watching people walk into the park and I was shocked by how fat everyone was. What are these people doing with their lives?

This summer has been an eye opener to me as to how fat people are and just how much they don't care. This is my first year as an adult being a member of a pool since my son is now 3 years old and can enjoy it. Aside from myself, I'd say there are about a total of less than 10 adults at this pool that are not fat. And I'm not talking obese, but just people who you can tell have let themself go and just don't care. As a dude who turns 37 years old soon and has always been fit, I simply do not understand that mindset.

This past weekend I took a weekend trip to Ocean City, MD and the first thing I thought about when I got out on the beach Saturday was "holy shit there are a lot of fat people here" and it was just more of the same.

Updated August 31, 2017: According to the most recent data, adult obesity rates now exceed 35 percent in five states, 30 percent in 25 states, and 25 percent in 46 states. West Virginia has the highest adult obesity rate at 37.7 percent and Colorado has the lowest at 22.3 percent. The adult obesity rate decreased in Kansas between 2015 and 2016, increased in Colorado, Minnesota, Washington, and West Virginia, and remained stable in the rest of states. This supports trends that have shown overall leveling off of obesity rates in recent years.

At the risk of geting this thread moved over to P&N, maybe we should start putting a tax on drinks and foods with high amounts of added sugar?

Less crowded open spaces and hiking trails for the rest of us with all the fatties sitting inside eating.

The main problem is manufactured starch and sugar is SO much cheaper than fiber, protein, and fat.

Next time you go to the grocery store really take a close look at all the aisles filled with starch/sugar and how they outnumber the fiber/protein/fat items.

Just don't buy stuff from those aisles often and you won't have that problem.

My grocery shopping typically consists of staying on the perimeter of the store - bread, milk, meat, and produce. I venture in some aisles for almonds, frozen veggies, and some snacks for my son, and a few other things, but not much else.

Vegetables can be really cheap but the vast majority of America sucks ass at preparing them in a healthy yet tasty manner.

I personally think fasting could be the answer. People need to learn that they can survive without food every waking moment. I've never been overweight, but I have used food to make myself feel better, be it a long day at work, a fight with a loved one, or something else. It was only after I gave fasting a try (16 hour fast, basically skip breakfast) that I began to realize the power I was giving food.

Once I was able to make it past the cravings, I was able to say no to the fast food burger for lunch after having to stay late at a client all morning. I started going home for lunch and making myself food. I was able to lose weight and save money.

While I'm not religious, I think this is one area they got it right. Fasting can be good for you. And more people should try it.
