Dont you love people with absolutely no background in CE/EE making these assumptions?

I think that you really mean ECE/EE, right? CE typically stands for Civil Engineering.

Computer Engineering?

I would hestitate to use CS (Computer Science), because of the fact that a lot of low level institutions label their intro-to programming classes as CS. Perhaps a more accurate acronym is CSE (Computer Science and Engineering).

If a school has a program that's solely Computer Engineering, then the term usually would be Comp. E; I know I'm anal retentive about terminology, but I'm just saying.

F.U. and all your computer engineering/chemical burning/world advancing majors. Agriculture 4 Life! :)

BTW. 4 GHz AMD = not going to happen. Would be cool for us (assuming it didn't cost $5000) but it would screw their business model ultimately. 2006 looks rather mundane, besides some potential overclocking goodness when the switch to 65nm hits the streets.

Seems like AMD would have a hard time surprising you guys, :p
- Since you seem to expect so much. :D

I know 40% sounds like a lot and maybe IBM is exagerating but I have to point out something really significant to you guys.

This new process uses a layer of silicon germanium. For the first time that I know of since the invention of the chips, a mass market consumer processor is being made of something other than bulk silicon. This is a huge development. Solid silicon germanium chips can speeds a lot faster than 4GHz right now so outlandish seeming clockspeed targets may actually be feasible.

For the first time???? Did you google Intel and Silicon Germanium at all?

They already did it with the s939 Opterons. What a lovely surprise they were *)

every one ( including me) thinks that dell might offer some amd comps, and thats why there seems to be a shortage of amd cpus. but it could be a fake like every thing else.

That would be amazing, exept the big bully Intel may put down the iron fist and threaten Dell's constant supply of Intel processors.

I don't think 4GHz is anywhere within the realm of possibility in the near term, since socket M2 chips are said to have higher power consumption than current E stepping chips, even if 65nm arrives early, and has substantial gain in performance, they won't be able to wring that muhc performance out of the hcips while keeping TDP sane at the same time.

Exactly - no way in hades they release anything remotely close to 4 Ghz by year's end, which is a mere 20 days from now. They don't even have a 3 Ghz processor yet! FX-57 runs at a "mere" 2.8 Ghz by comparison.

There's no question 2006 should be one of the best for AMD ever, with mid 3 Ghz CPU's hopefully sometime in 2006 (and probably thwarting whatever Intel has out at the time), but it makes absolutely no sense for AMD to even release 65nm at this time, since they have the undisputed performance crown. Better to plod along as they have, piling on the improvements for their 65nm architecture and release it when the market demands - ie when Intel gets their chips whose codenames I get confused (Conroe? Crusoe? Jacques Cousteau?).

To claim 4 Ghz AMD anytime soon is crazy, especially since both Intel and AMD have put their eggs in the dual core basket, which is itself a new climb to 3 Ghz.

Nobody told you that Intel is Dells bitch? Intel cant afford to lose Dell. Therefore, Dell dictates the conditions to Intel and when Intel doesnt give in, these rumors about Dell going AMD pop up and usually disappear within a few days... did you never wonder why that is? :)

Heh, if AMD went under, leaving Intel as the only major player, I could just imagine Paul Otellini striding into Michael Dell's office, shoving his middle finger in Dell's face and shouting "Discount, what f**king discount!"

Haha, you bet that would happen. :D
