Is Alumni free?

U know after graduating from university...these guys who run the alumni are asking me to join them..blah-blah...i see no benefits but anyways...are these things generally free or u gotta pay? They never mentioned any payment in all the correspondence they sent me but seems like they are doing an AWFUL lot for free?...

is yours free or are they free?

I get letters begging for fairly sizable donations roughly every 3 months. Of course, I see no benefit to me from losing all of that money.

I got one year free when I graduated. AFter that they wanted like $150/yr or $2500 for a lifetime membership.

I am not a member 🙂

my observation, So. Cal universities (UCLA vs. USC)

I've witnessed USC alumnis actually look out for their new grads, networking and getting them jobs.

I've never seen or even heard of anyone getting a job after graduation because of the UCLA alumni association, everyone I talked to who joined wanted their money back.

btw, I'm a UCLA grad but I have friends in both schools. I would never join the UCLA alumni association.

best call I've gotten from UCLA alumni assoc., this was my last year.

AA: can I speak to the parents of horizonseeker?

me: well, they don't live here. (they called my apt)

AA: can I have their numbers?

me: who are you again? and what's the reason for this call?

AA: this is ucla alumni assoc. can I have their phone numbers?

me: you are going to have to tell me what the call is regarding. (i worked as a telemarketer for a summer job, so I always try to be polite to these people)

AA: well, can I have their numbers?

me: *hangs up*, fvckers.

No but the people who work for them are. I've done the calling many times, nice hours.

UCLA alumni... raise money for future events. we get the magazine for being members, but really, not much else right now. if i wanted to take an extension class though, the discount would be nice.

there are things that you can do with the alumni association but it's not going to benefit you really. no one's there to really look for a job for you. but then it's UCLA and ass coddling is not allowed. i like to think of it as a huge potential untapped network if need be. there are bruin alumni everywhere.

i get some alumni benefits,

lifelong email account,
discounts on local businesses,
access to career services (job postings, on-campus interviews, etc),
discounts on sporting event tix,
etc

EDIT: recent grad, don't pay anything yet 😛

There are no benefits of joining the Alumni.

NOT TRUE...!

If you've ever seen "Blue Chips", you'll full well know from Nick Nolte's press conference at the end that the alumni sit in the corner and jerk off over hot young athletic prospects....

I'd have to pay if I want to join the University of Oregon Alumni Association.
The only benefit I know of is that you can buy football tickets before they are available to the general public. I've thought about joining just so I can get good seats and take my kids to a couple games.
