Is AIM down?

If they catch you using a program like DeadAim, they will deactivate your account. (they just started doing this) Go check the email address with which you registered you screenname for reactivation instructions. If you used a junk account to register, then consider your screenname gone.

Where did you hear about this? Do you know if this affects Trillian and GAIM users as well?

I'm just using Adium on OS X. Doesn't work on iChat either. WTF?

Use of any 3rd party aim client is subject to account deactivation. This has always been in their terms of use, they just now started enforcing it. AFAIK, trillian users have not been affected, but GAIM, DeadAim, and some others have. Not everyone has gotten the boot, but some people have.

On a Windows PC now, doesn't work with Meebo or AIM Express..downloading AIM real quick.

EDIT: On AIM for Windows, it just gets stuck at step 2 (verifying username/password), and then says the AIM service cannot be reached after ~30 seconds. Nothing in my e-mail account. WTF do I do?

EDIT 2: Now I'm getting "The AIM Service is temporarily unavailable."

Read this thread:

quote from the second page of that thread:

"Found the cause of this.

Apparently, AOL is now suspending AIM accounts that log on with IM clients other than their own.

I was using Miranda-IM, and was just unceremoniously kicked offline while in the middle of a conversation. Tried to sign back on, and the same thing happened - password failure.

I noticed my gmail notification going off, and sure enough, there was a email from AOL notifying me that my account was suspended. Unfortunately, my original screenname, being so old, no longer had a valid email address associated with it, it's unrecoverable.

****** AOL. I'm not using AIM anymore, even though I have over 200 contacts on it. They can all kiss my ass."

OMFG. I just reset my password, and it does the same thing. WTF I FVCKING HATE YOU AOL.

THIS IS FVCKING BULLSHIT. AIM HAS NOT UPDATED THEIR CLIENT ON OS X IN MORE THEN TWO YEARS. I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO USE A 3RD PARTY CLIENT. OMFG.

WTF?? Are they serious?!?! Do they know how many ppl use a 3rd party client? Why would they want to slice their userbase in half by enforcing something like this?

Hmmm...I haven't used the AIM client for several years now. I switched to Trillian and haven't looked back. What the hell is AOL thinking? Suspending accounts for using 3rd party clients? I don't see anything wrong with that. Last time I used the AIM client it has soo much bloat to it.

WELL WTF AM I SUPPOSED TO DO? I'm getting all the "side effects" of what he said, and I'm LOCKED OUT of my account. My other screennames work, and I can actually login to AOL's website, but not into AIM.

sorry, that sounds like bs to me

try waiting a few hours or a whole day without attempting to login and then see if you can login.
i get the occasional aim hickup which goes away after a while

Have you tried logging into a different account?

Yes, and it works fine. These are accounts I havent used in a year+. The one that doesn't work is the one I use on a daily basis.

It's possible there were some kind of issues with Miranda specifically, but no they are not shutting everyone out. I doubt that is related to your problem at all.

That's BS that AOL is cracking down on third-party add-ons and programs. They shouldn't continually release crappy AIM clients filled to the top with giant ads and bloatware (and at some points in AIM history, spyware like Weatherbug).

According to AOL Support chat:

"AOLTechRCR Unfortunately, we do not have any official news regarding that."

They refuse to help me out whatsoever, since they don't offer support for AIM. What a bunch of bullshit.

another theory is that they somehow thought your account is involved with bot activity.. they will suspend for a number of reasons.
