IS AGP being outdated?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know PCI-E is the next best thing, but is AGP done in for? The reason I ask is I want to upgrade when BF2 comes out, but I dont know if I want to make the switch to PCI-E yet. Are agp video cards going to be limited, or will they plan to make agp cards along with pci-e cards? Your input will be useful.........also, in my current setup, what would u upgrade?

AGP isn't "done for," but it's definitely not the standard for the future. Also, I wouldn't upgrade a thing in yoru rig except the DVD burner. I'd get an NEC 3520 for like $52 shipped @ newegg.

Performance wise there is no real noticeable difference right now but the potential is there in PCI-E when technology uses the bandwith available. You should continue to see AGP cards available for about another 2 years

It's being replaced by PCIe, and anything but slowly. There will be one nice used AGP card market though 😎

I belive we will see just about every card in the next generation available in AGP. After that refresh, it should be almost done for..

Yeah, AGP will eventually replace AGP but not for a couple of years, PCI-e has much more potential but it will take time to develop. Also since it is new there are a few bugs in it, or so I have heard that can be a real pain. For now I will stick to AGP, I usually don't upgrade a system, I just build one that I can use over the long haul and by the time I buy a new one hopefully all this new tech will be fully developed.

For now there are no performance increases in PCI-e compared to AGP and in some tests I have seen that PCI-e does not perform as well as AGP.

current PCI-E cards dont take even close to full advantage of its potential- AGP is plenty fast enough for current generation cards. however, it is technically obsolete since PCI-E is the superior standard.

all the companies make more money when we have to buy new stuff when they make some new standard. this is why there is PCI Express. if you want a nice computer, you'll have to conform, though. 🙁

AGP is being forced out, to be blunt. It wasn't at a point where it had outlived its potential, but a new standard was created that's a lot better, so... there you are. All of the cards that are currently out have AGP equivalents; I very much doubt the next generation of cards will have AGP support at all.

Like ribbon13 said though, if you stay AGP... prices will be dirt cheap and performance will be comparable to what's currently available on PCI-e machines. A rare occurrence indeed.

The major hardware manufacturers are pushing it HARD by developing whole families of native PCI-E parts. New PCI-E cards are already a bit cheaper that their AGP counterparts, and I expect that trend to continue. Yeah, I think AGP's on the fast track to obsoleteness.

I wouldn't upgrade to another AGP card. PCI-E is definately the new standard, with new cards coming out sooner and cheaper on PCI-E. The PCI-E variants are also sometimes faser. For example, the PCI-E version of the 6600GT has gpu/mem speeds of 500/1000, while the AGP 6600GT runs at 450/900.

alot of the agp 6600 gt's are 500/1000

if your building a new computer right now it really depends on your budget, a great Nforce 3 mobo is much cheaper than a great Nforce 4

Depends on your whole system, right now at least,

i do still think that we will see apg varients of the next gen cards, unless they do not so you have to buy new mobo's and they make more money, but if one company does it the other will to, just to stay competetive

If you think about it, its very similar to IDE-SATA-SATA II
