do you think it increases performance much over 4X? Or will fps still drop hard when the video card has to access main system memory

Main system memory will no longer be a bottle neck once AMD gets there new proc own with it's own mem controler. We wont know wether or not 8x AGP will truely be needed untill we know how well the onboard mem controler performs.

PS: On current systems it's useless

"PS: On current systems it's useless"

It's more useful than PCI. AGP 8X is nothing to hold-out upgrading for, but nothing is wrong with progress.

AGP x8 will help a lot for the next generation of games like Unreal2 and Doom3 because of their high polygon counts, widespread pixel and vertex shader support and multitudes of large textures.

1x agp provides 132 mb sec

2x agp provides 264 mb sec

4x agp provides 1 gb a sec

8x agp provides 2.1 gb sec

and are independent of most pci transactions

so as games scale upwards the agp will be able to supply more bandwidth if the rest of the system doesn't become the bottleneck lol
