Is Active SMART giving me right results about my HD'S ?

Hello again !
I am using Active SMART link for a month now and it kept reporting some smart errors about temperature on my 30 GB 75 GXP but everything is running fine. I suppose the Bios should give a warning if something goes wrong ?! That is the reason why SMART for HD was invented right ?

Anyway, I installed a new 60 GB 120 GXP HD and the same program is giving me the same errors after 5 minutes of usage for both of my drives ! I don't understand. The room temperature is around 20 C, case is around 24-26 C. And now, the case is open and usually it was really well ventilated.

Should I worry or that program is just giving false results or false interpretations ?

Thanks !

What temperatures is it reporting? Is it way over or just going marginal? If your seeing big spikes in the monitored temperatures especially during times of non-access, then I would discount the warnings. If its just going over the limit a little, I would look at the temps its reporting normally during normal use. The temp sensors on those drives may give back higher readings than another brand. If the temp variation is low, but still going over the limit, I am not sure I would worry overly much.

But if you seeing big variations that correspond to use and it is going well into the warning temp range then maybe your drives are getting hot. Try blowing a fan on them and see if they still give warnings.

Maybe it was high temperatures that cause the higher than normal return rate for IBM's?

Well, Active SMART doesn't give actual values. It gives the threshold, the value and the worst value. For the temperature, the threshold is 0. By default, every value is at 100 , some at 150 and some other at 200. If that value changes from the original value, the program gives a warning. The warning tells you if the value got hither or lower than its last value.

The temperature of a HD varies a lot over time and usage. This might be the reason why I keep having these warnings. I Don't really know how that program works and how to evaluate the results !

Yeah the SMART feature on IBM hard drives is especially telling...it goes click-click-click-click...and your data goes to bit/byte heaven.

Thanks WarCon, that IBM program works very well and it sais my drives are healthy. 😉
I don't worry too much because my 30 GB 75 GXP ran very well for more than 2 years, the drive is full and let me tell you it was very often under HUGE STRESS when I was doing photoshop with 300 MB files last summer !
Now, that new 60 GB 120 GXP that I have, I'll test it for the first months and keeping it cool. Everything should be fine. At least, the 120 GXP model isn't bad rated and its pretty fast !

Thanks !

Glad to be of service.........🙂

I just put an 80G WD special edition in my system and the increased speed is noticeable. And I some people were complaining about it being noisy. I think those people have never owned one or can hear an ant fart.....😀
