Is abstinence from premarrital sex a completely antiquated notion?

And it made me wonder is this aspect of christianity just being phased out of practice? Are there any nonfundamentalist christians that still follow this sort of rule/regulation? I'm just curious what ATOT thinks on this matter.

EDIT: I also just wonder about this outside the christian scope. The reason I limited it to christianity is that most people in this forum are likely christian so I wanted to get some more responses

I feel like it is. My parents are pretty religious, and they supported my decision to become sexually active (and thought I was very mature to talk to them about seeing my doctor to go on the pill).

I think it's probably still recognized as an ideal situation, but maybe people realize that in today's society, it's becoming increasingly commonplace.

Interesting topic.

Yes, I am saving sex for marriage. Its not a fundamentalist thing, its clear that God created sex only for the union of marriage, which he also created.

I feel it too. I'm no Christian (far from it). I believe that its a matter of showing respect to your wife/future wife. So many men want themselves to be her first, or whatever. They also wish that she was a virgin (not so that she's inexperienced in bed, but just the whole purity idea... that YEA I GET TO BE FIRST). Thus, save it for later...

But I'm not like totally set on no premarital sex. I used to be really against premarital sex, but now I'm just ehh so so. Maybe. I'd rather not, and I would probably not, but who knows.. I feel that my opinions could change anyday.

i do not think it is an antiquated notion at all. i think it is pretty impractical, and really hard... but for those who can do it.. Kudos to them.

pretty much. much of the ideas on sex are because for the vast majority of human history we had no reliable birth control. not to mention how dangerous childbirth was before modern medicine.

The purpose of religion's stance on premarital sex is to prevent having children before ready for them. Especially since in times past a child born out of wedlock had a much lower chance of success in life, due to its mother (being female) having few to no employment options and its father possibly not owing up to it and supporting it.

Now though, we have birth control, and almost equal rights between the genders. And since sex is such an important part of a deep relationship (eg. marriage) it's silly to go into it without knowing how compatible you are sexually with your potential mate. I just shake my head and sigh at people who won't have sex before marriage. Or in the case of ATOT, I laugh at people who can't

i don't see the point, and we'll see how it works for those that actually wait and only have 1 partner...then wonder what it would be like with someone else

Agreed, I'm not even Christian, yet I am doing my best to stay celibate until marriage out of respect for my future significant other.

Sexual relations should never be entered lightly. Having sex with with woman 1 on monday, woman 2 on tuesday, woman 3 on wedsnesday, etc, thats idiotic. Its also a good way to contract an STD.

But if you date someone exclusively for an extended period of time, I don't see the problem with intercourse. Naturally, couples not seeking a child should use proper precautions though.

My thought here is that by not having sex with anyone else you're less likely to wish for anything else because you've never had any better sex if you see what I'm saying.

haha, that's like saying you'll only ever drive a Ford Escort because if you were ever to touch a superior vehicle you'll actually know how much you are missing out on... this is why you have test drives ;)

Look how great the world is becoming with all these people humping whenever they want! Lots of kids no one care about, lots of people with lifelong diseases for those 1 night stands, lots of pain for a few moments of pleasure. Even the 'safe' people can be screwed in the bad way. It's not antequated, it's intelligent.

So being against premarital sex is a good position for guys with small penises? :D

Thats another thing that bothers me. With religion I just dont see why you can go on believing something yet fail to follow the guidelines and think you're just fine.

i'm not christian, but I would view it in the same manner as politics. While I don't agree with everything the US does, I feel proud to be an American and support most things.

edit: basically i think it's better to think for yourself, then to follow blindly....like sheep

Guys who say they are saving it for marriage are full of crap and the opportunity has not come up, or when it did they were too scared to do anything about it.
