As others have mentioned, most insurance plans include, or can include, Emergency Road Service. I think I pay $4/year for it and have used it twice in the past three or four years.

Edit>> I pay $3.07/year for this coverage.

QFT, I use mine through State Farm. I did have AAA for a long time.

My cars don't break down much. My last roadside was probably 6+ years ago at a dog park.

The irony was they were having an event for Tow Truck drivers there, no one would hook me up, I had to wait 2+ hours for a ride to come from Miami (I was at Delray Beach).

Then they didn't pay attention to the instructions that I need a flat bed that can accommodate low vehicles. Fortunately at the dog park the other tow drivers let me use their wood and when we got home I had a few boards in my workshop that got me off the bed.

Many people with project cars use AAA for free flatbed trips back and forth to the shop as the project progresses. This can be a number of trips during a restoration, or even when working out issues keeping a car from passing smog inspection so it can be registered and driven on the street.

That is abusing the system.

They won't tow you shop to shop, you have to push the project curbside.

Whoops, I pay $2.70 per 6 months, per car. That's $10.80/yr, and has been well worth it. :)

Not sure how mine is >300% of yours with the same company tho. $4/yr doesn't sound right unless mine has gotten jacked up for using it.

I was mistaken. That $3.07 is every 6 months, or $6.14/year. Sounds like you get a multi-car discount.

We've been AAA members for almost a decade and membership practically pays for itself, a few examples of the discounts we've received:

  • Travel services we booked our first cruise a few years ago, we received a considerable discount on airfare, hotel, cruise and travel insurance.
It was also nice having a local contact instead of relying on a toll free number.
  • Theme park and movie ticket discounts.
  • Car buying service
  • Free maps, guides, etc.
  • AAA Financial Services
  • AAA insurance which has competitive rates especially if you bundle and have an excellent credit rating.
Vehicle, property, life, travel and wedding insurance are available.

I've been a Triple A+ member for a while.

It has been very helpful at times. You get 4 free tows a year up to 100 miles. Doesn't matter who owns the car as long as you're in it.

Yea, it's cool.

edit: I guess I should note....I haven't ever called for the basics like changing a tire. I've only called when a tow is needed.

not worth it unless you are elderly or just plain lazy.

You mean like this guy and his buddy?

It was well worth it for a buddy of mine.

He pulled into my driveway with a nearly flat tire and AAA came and put the spare on while we sat inside and drank. Really a life saver.

LOL, yeah a "life saver" is a bit of an overstatement, for something any self respecting male should be able to do on his own in about 10 minutes, don't you think?

I can't stand helpless people.

Anyway, I've thought about getting AAA for years, since I first moved to Virginia 12 years ago and didn't know anyone around to call in case I got into trouble. Pretty much every year I've thought about it, and pretty much every year I haven't needed a tow, so the way I figured it, I saved myself about $600 by not buying AAA. :)

I've never had to use it so technically no, it has not been worth it to me.

I had it for a while, never used it. Don't have a car now, but I'd get it just for insurance purposes -- no one else is coming to help me otherwise.

You pay for the service why not put it to use.

I had kind of a beater before my current vehicle, and AAA helped me out a number of times. One time, I blew my timing belt. Thankfully, it was a non-interference motor.

I have used it twice in the last few years.
We have it for our trailer/truck combo, it gives a little peace of mind when traveling all over.
Recently the company sponsored a charter trip as the reward for a safety program, and one of the guy's cars died on the way there.
The driver showed up with the slide bed and another driver with him. There was no room for the two guys with the dead car.
The slide bed driver said it was legal for them to ride in the car on the bed.
They asked if they could drink; the tow driver recommended it, so they rode back there for two hours, drinking beer :D

Good, I don't have to feel cheated, lol. Mine probably has a multi-car discount applied as well.

I think roadside service becomes more valuable when one considers other family members. I'm going to do what I can and is financially reasonable to both protect and convenience female family members who may get stuck somewhere. The state farm deal has been outstanding and one I've used multiple times (tows needed after 2 alternators died, off the top of my head.)

When I bought my car it came with Subarus roadside assistance for a while at no extra charge. I have towing coveage with state farm and its like 50 cents a month or something crazy low. I have considered getting AAA for the woman, but for me, its not really needed...

I can, but why should I bother getting my hands and jeans dirty when I can call AAA and they can do it for me?

...and risk getting smeared by a passing motorist texting that drifts onto the shoulder.

We've often used it for discounts on hotels. And while I usually change any of our flats myself, I actually called them one time to change a flat for us when the tire went flat just before a toll plaza and the only place I could pull over was in an area just past the tolls where cars exiting from the rightmost tolls were merging with the cars exiting from the center tolls (ie - NOT a shoulder) and there's no way I was going to change the tire with cars exiting from toll booths right behind me. The dude showed up with a big flat bed and helped protect us from the traffic behind us and changed the tire in less than 5 minutes. That was worth it.

Yea the side of the road sucks. When I was towed in the city the dude was running all over the road and I was like D: what a dangerous job. Pretty sure some jackass in a dodge challenger went like 50mph 6 inches from him in a 30mph zone and he couldn't have cared less.
