Is a wireless access point what I need?

I recently wired up my house with cat6 all around. Cable line is entering the house thru the basement and thats where the modem and router are. From there, I have cat6 cables running to all the rooms. But recently the wife mentioned that having wireless would be nice (and I agree). Well I have a wireless router (D-Link DI-524) but the router doesnt put out a signal strong enough to reach the 2nd floor from the basement, and thus, I have the wireless disabled on the router.

So I've been considering connecting a Wireless access point to one of the ports in the computer room so that we have wireless all across the 2nd floor (and maybe even the first floor). Is a wireless access point what I'd need to achieve this? Also do I have to get a D-LINK WAP to work with the DI-524? What features should I be looking out for when buying a WAP?

or is there some other solution to this? (better router + repeater)

TIA

A WAP would work in that instance, yes. Also, a WAP (or wireless router with DHCP disabled) is far superior to a router + repeater.

One thing you might consider is if you ran multiple CAT6 to a room is to move the router into that room. Should be possible by having the cable modem feed into one of the CAT6 going to that room and then have the router go back down to the switch in your basement through the other CAT6.

^What he said, and if you only have one cable to the room with the best location then get a router and configure it with a static IP up out of the dhcp range of the router in the basement ( I use the bacardi address, .151 😛 ) and disable DHCP as drebo mentioned. Now it is a switch in that room for other devices too.

In your case you do not need the extra setting thta an Access Point provides.

Since a good Access Point is usally more expensive id is better to get a Wireless Router and use it as Switch with an Access Point.

I would lay a cable from the basment to somewhere in the first floor that is exposed to most of he House and installed there this unit acting as an Access Point.

It has High Power RF output and it would provide good coverage.
