Is a Wireless Access Point my solution for this problem?

techs

Lifer
I need to get the internet to another part of my house that has no way to run an ethernet cable.
I want to get a wireless access point which will be fed from a wireless router in my home, and then hook that up to a switch so I can just plug any computer in using a network cable.

Am I right in wanting an Access Point, or do I need some other device?

Is this likely to work in the real world?
And do most access points support WPA security nowadays?

Thanks!

Most wireless routers and APs support a "bridge" mode. Of course, you will need access to BOTH units, the gateway and your bridged device (which will basically operate as a HUB with the uplink being the wifi connection).

If you need strong Wireless.

Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833162134

Otherwise, Asus WL-520GU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833320023

Flash (either )with 3rd party free firmware.

Tomato features - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomato_(firmware)#Features

Otherwise, use DD-WRT - http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/ind..._is_DD-WRT?#Features

It is much easier to Flash Tomato than DD-WRT, thus to avoid frustration and Bricking risk I would recommend to casual “Flashers” to go with Tomato.

Thanks. Turns out there is a slight possiblity I may be able to run a network cable. I'll know by the end of next week.
Otherwise, its a bridge for me.
