Is a software firewall necessary with a Netgear RP614 Router?

I'm currently running Zonealarm on a computer attached to a Netgear RP614 Websafe Broadband router. But, I'm wondering if a software firewall is necessary.
 
It's not necessary but it's good to prevent software that calls out into the wild. Such would be some spyware, software that tries to do auto updates, etc.
