Is a single phone line 112kbps modem possible?

I need to stick to dial-up for costs but was wondering if 56k was as fast as it gets? i know you can get dual phone line modems that bond the data flow but what about single lines?

Actually 53K is as fast as it gets. Due to FCC regs on crosstalk and interferance, a phone like cannot operate above 53K without breaking the law. If you ever read the fine print for 56K access you might notice that some put in a blurb about maximum speeds and the FCC.

I am afraid we are at the end of the line so to speak.

not that I know of. limitations in how the phone system works prevent the modem to get any faster.

ISDN however uses the same frequencies that a modem (and normal conversations) does over the phone line, only it's in digital form (no conversion necessary at either end). because of it's different method of transmitting data, it can hit the speeds you want, but you're not looking for an ISDN solution.

I'm out of range for any sort of high speed internet save for satellite. because of that, I tried asking my phone company about ISDN (it has a longer range than their ADSL), and they said they were fazing out ISDN completely, so we couldn't get it. it's a shame!

Yeah, NTL offer a free access on dialup but £25.00 a month on cable, it's not much but it's more than i have at the moment so i was hoping to find a better dial-up modem. This all sounds very final though.
