i have a OCZ powerstream 520 watt power supply and am building a socket 939 system this weekend if my motherboard arrives in time. i will be putting the following into it -
X2 4400
ASUS A8V DELUXE
ZALMAN 7700 the all copper one
1 GB OCZ PC3200 that is my signature
plextor 716A DVD-RW
benq 1640 DVD-RW
plextor premium CD-RW
2 maxtor 250 GB hard drives that are in signature
radeon X800XT AIW
and this is all going into a P180 case with 4 120mm fans proivided i can fit the one on the bottom with the power supply installed which leads me to my question of is the 520 i have now good enough for this system?

I don't get it. Where's the other 300W of stuff?

Yes, of course it will work. You have about 250W worth of equipment.

Hrm. What's that one link to figure out exact wattage of stuff?

I've seen one wattage calculator often linked to -- and it hideously overestimates almost everything, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Yeah, that's the one. I imagine this link is part of why people suddenly seem to think they need 600W PSUs for relatively 'normal' systems that could be run with a 300W unit without any problems.

Edit: Actually, maybe this is a different one with a very similar look, or they've fixed it, since now it actually seems to put out sane wattage values. It's still a little high (the hard drive and CD/DVD drive numbers are about double what they probably draw in practice), but much closer to reality.

Okay. :]
How about the one Makaveli provided?
Edit: I've seen a different one before... D:

Well I think the problem is this gives u a recommendation with all the components under full load. And on normal use, you wouldn't be drawing all that power at once. So the link should be taken more as advice, and not the final decision when deciding on a PSU, which u shouldn't be buying anyways just based on Wattage.

That'll be fine.

See the rig in my sig: it's powered by a 520W

well to be honest i have no clue when it comes to what each piece of hardware draws on the power supply so i figured the 600 would handle it all with ease and had no idea my 520 was already overkill.

WHT??? NOOO WAY. He needs PCP&C 700W LED CUSTOM... OMGZZZ

;)

j/k of course, but yeah I swear some of the threads I read about recommending ridiculous expensive RAM that does barely anything in benchmarks even, or these absurd $150 600w power supplies. LOL.

edit: In Anand's video card reviews, they give idle and load consumption of the system, and even the current cards like X1800 and 7800, I think the idle is around 140-160w and 250-270w load, and he benchmarks with pretty hefty systems.
