Is a multi-colored cold cathode just a flourescent lamp with different phoshpor coatings?

So it is? And why is it called a "cold cathode" then? I assume it can't be a neon light because then multiple lights per tube would be impossible.

well neon uses neon gas for the discharge... i don't think cold cathode is flourescent though, those kind of lights look... different. look at one up close and it sorta pulses. my cathode doesn't do that. i assume the outer surface is negatively charged (the anode) and the inner one is positively charged... the outer needs to be coated with phosphor... but thats how tvs work so i assume its the same.

I know what neon lights use. I was just trying to figure out how it was possible to make the dual and trilight CCs. I was under the assumption that cold cathodes are just modified versions of flouro lamps (though I have no clue what's different) that use different phosphors.
