And I don't mean thumbing some 1X1.5" keyboard on a cellphone or buggaring around with a stylus on a PDA that accesses only wml sites in black and white through a $200/month wireless connection or anything :D

I don't know much about mobile technology

The cheapest good way to acces the internet is probably a cable modem. Who cares what machine it's hooked up to?

This is for somebody without a computer who needs to buy hardware that is mobile, to be used in a hotel that would have an internet connection.

Gee, that wouldn't have been useful to know or anything :)

Yeah, get a laptop. You can even use the hotel's phone line w/ the laptop's modem if you're in a hotel w/ no other internet connection.

This is for me for Christmas since I am going to be staying in a hotel quite often. I would need the laptop to access the internet and act as a word processor. Doesn't have to be top of the line, just decent as I don't want to have to fling it across the room if I get ticked at it! :)

If the hotel is one of the few that doesn't offer high-speed internet, then sure, use the phone line - if it's one of the 1% that doesn't use digital phone lines (Meridian system, etc)

If money is a consideration you could buy a Desknote. It looks like a laptop but it's actually a desktop replacement. Cheaper than a laptop but way more portable than a desktop.

You need to check e-bay and try to get a deal on a cheap lappy. My friend Jake got a killer deal on a 500MHZ lappy.

So how is that NOT a laptop? Just because the battery is outside of the case and you can change the components yourself? Why have I not heard of these before?

Well....... the battery outside only last 1 hour and it's not really ment for low power consumption sincec it uses desktop processors & hard drives.

Better yet...take it away...then PLAY HALO ALL NIGHT LONG IN FRONT OF HIM!!!

I predict you will end up receiving AT least the following as ransom frm Skoorb:
* a spankin new Dell lappy with leather inserts
* 3 foot rubs a day for at least a year

Sounds exactly like my kind of system since my laptop stays plugged in anyway. Know any good sites to custom build/buy them from? Want to see how they compare to Sagers from Powernotebooks.com

I'm not saying the desknote is bad........ I think even in Anand's review of the desknote he says its a desktop replacement rather then a laptop per say.

A laptop is a much better choice than a PocketPC since the browser lags behind and isn't really upgradeable (or compatible with normal plugins).

A good but slightly pricey choice would be one of the thin / light ones (2.5 - 5 Lbs) instead of the monster 8 Lb gaming laptops. IBM has some nice ones with excellent keyboards.

A cheap choice is something used, either from FS/FT or a decent refurb vendor like www.truedataproducts.com.

You might want to pack a mini-optical mouse (Amazon has user reviews on different models) since both the pencil-eraser and touchpad are harder to use.

One bonus for getting a newer laptop is good stereo sound for MP3 / WMA playback so you could bring a few ripped CDs to listen to on the hard drive. And DVD playback if you want to watch something besides the hotel movie.
