Is a GTX 780 a future proof GPU?

Hello everyone ! Well i was wondering exactly that. Is a GTX 780 a future proof choice? Since the new generation of consoles are arriving with 8 gigs of GDDR5 ram shared with the system and the gpu im very worried about to be limited in the next gen games titles. I had a GTX 770 DCU2 wich i was planning to SLI it with another but i received replies here that my i5 4670 non k can bottleneck both cards so i had a chance to sell my 770 and i did. Now i have the chance to buy an ASUS GTX 780 DCU2 and what stopped me is the fact that i've been thinking about next gen games. 3GB of VRAM only and it doesnt even support full DX11.1. I'd hate to spend $749 and after 6 months the card would not give me a chance to max out a next gen game.
What do you think guys ? Titan is not a solution, no way im spending 1000 in that.. should i take the 780 or wait.. months? Years maybe? Lol thanks in advance.

Well, no...no GPU is future proof but it is a very high end GPU with 3GB of memory. So it will last a while for most people.

I'll be honest, I'm running SLI 670's at 1440p with only 2GB of memory and I am not at all worried about any new games around the corner that I won't be able to play.

I'd wait, at least until we see if AMD reveals any new cards. At least then you have a clear picture of the landscape for the coming months and maybe a little price movement on the 780.

From what I understand DX11.1/11.2 adds things that can be done at the driver level and doesn't require new hardware.

I read the news about amd and their new gpus coming in september that will compete with the titan. Its going to cost 800 or 900 may be. If it is as powerful or even more and has the same amount of gddr5 vram it would worth the wait but since i dont know any of the specs, whats going to be better or wost.. just dont know if it worth the wait or take the 780. 780's price is not bad at all! Would have been perfect with 2 gigs more at least but it was obvious it wasnt posible because titan sales would fall noticeably. I'll look up for details to see if i can find out what amd has to offer this time. Actually there are no games i havent played so far so i can stay a while without a discrete gpu i think.. dont know for how long though lol

We don't know, so waiting a bit can not hurt. It's only a month or so until we should know everything.

First off there is no thing as use say "Future proof" in the PC world. Second those new consles use sharded ram not dedicated and the GPU is so low power that it would be hard pressed to use even more than 1GB Vram let alone anything more. The GTX 780 can use more than 2GB Vram because it actually has the horsepower to use it wothout lagging out.

That's was not a wise move.

3GBof ram is more than enough. DX 11.1 is nothiong to get all worked up about as it's nothing major and will be in very few games and will not offer anthiong substantial over DX11.

Overclocked, mine rips through most everything, even at 1440p. I'm going to get another before bf4 comes out, and I feel like I should be set for a good while, though it remains to be seen what the new console generation will do to game requirements.

We are a few months away from products based on the next process which will have a genuine performance increase. These come around every 2 years or so and the first product on the current process came out January 2012, so the 780 is both a pretty late product in the cycle and its soon to be largely be replaced by stuff with twice as many transistors. So no I don't consider its future proof, no product is. But if you want longevity you want to buy earlier in the cycle.

I'd say the 780GTX runs games better than everything else right now except for the titan which isn't worth the cost due to the 780 GTX.

Yea i know it wasnt a good move, i regret a little bit but its done now. Lets wait till september seems that its a better deal since the massive optimizations for amd radeon and AMD always has been a more affordable choice in price-performance ratio, about the 700 series anyone else experienced issues with the 320.XX drivers? Stutters like hell even in the browser, had to remain my 770 that i sold already with the 314.22.

Problem with the new AMD cards is that they are pretty far away.

They are having a PAPER LAUNCH in September.
Reference cards end of October. They will be sold out everywhere so more wait time.
And even more time till companies release decent aftermarket cards.

Why did you sell your GTX 770? That had plenty of power, more than enough to play immediate future games.

People are really exaggerating the impact the next gen consoles will have on gaming. The new consoles are basically low to mid range computers (BF4 will be 720p on consoles for example), and it will take years before they realize their full potential. By then, GPUs will be three or more times more powerful than they are today..

Also, the 700 series are all DirectX 11.1 compatible at the hardware level with the exception of a few non gaming features.

So it's confirmed that AMD's 9000 series will be on 20nm?

Hmmm thats sounds like a correct statement.. I play at 1080p i think i wont move to 1440p for a long time. Also DX11.1 is not the main problem, im not planning to update to Win8 anytime soon, i tried it and went back inmediately to win7.
I can order right now the 780 in amazon right now but it'll take up to 10-15 days to arrive (Im in Argentina ) since i'm an enthusiast and i upgrade very often i think this card won't last in my rig more than 10 months . 😛
Well i made the decision, i'll take the 780. I'll give a feedback when it arrives. May be i'm exagerating too much with this stuff. Thanks guys, i love this forum, everyone here has been very kind giving their help and opinion.

A GTX 780 will be more than enough power to play games at 1080p maxed, or nearly maxed for at least 3 years....especially if you overclock.

The GTX 780 will pump 60fps or more and never drop frames. Its soo fast. Wht resolution do you play at. If 1080p it will be fast,, or even a higher resolution.. thx gl

Got it! I'll order it tomorrow. When i used the 770 i had issues with stutter and random freezes even at desktop, a temporary solution was reboot the system, but i found out that the problem were all the 320.xx Drivers, 314.22 worked flawlesly, you experienced something like that this days?

Well i will advice u to buy gtx 770 and that is play all most all games max out but 7970 is also at the same price and it has 3gb ram and gtx 770 is a bit faster so u have do decide which one u want.

I have two 4GB GTX 770s, and I never experienced any of those issues.

I'm running the 326.41 drivers though.. It's always advisable to run the latest drivers, beta or not..

It wouldn't have bottlenecked  bad decision my friend 🙁

Once overclocked, there's barely a difference between the 2. the 780 has more OC headroom due to it having the same TDP cap as the Titan.
