is a GF4 MX420 pci overkill for a pIII 766?

i bought a pIII 766 from a friend for cheap, it doesnt have a agp slot and i just want to put win98 on it and use it to play some of my older games, im wondering if i should get a NVIDIA GF4 MX420 ($99), a 64MB GF2 MX400 ($55), a ATI RADEON 7000 32MB ($51), or a ATI RADEON 7000 64MB ($82)...

im leaning towards the GF2 MX400, because its cheap and i think the GF4 might be overkill with a 766...

Radeon 7500 ain't an option 😛

I'd go for the 7000 32 MB. If you're going to play older games, you're not gonna need the extra memory.

thats true, but the GF2 MX400 is only 4 bucks more..

How about like a Geforce2 GTS for like 60 bucks ??? I'ze seen refurbs at Newegg for less, and it should have more memmory bandwidth than a gf4 mx (i think).

I don't see any Kyro PCI's on Pricewatch, but they do exist - I bought one but had to return it cause my Rad-5 LCD refused to sync with it

It would be a good match to pair the GF4 MX 420 or even 440 but the price isn't that great.
I would say go for one of the cheaper cards in the sub $60 range like the GF2 MX400 if it has to be PCI, but the 7500 would be a nice match too.

remember that the kyro2 doesn't have any hardware t&l, and so its performance is quite dependent on the speed of the cpu/rest of the system as well. for the price, i think a normal pci gf2 gts/pro is hard to beat, and they're cheaper than gf4mx's too.

Stop! Wait!
If you want a good video card that won't break the baNk and you're stuck with PCI only look no further.
Radeon 9000 PCI.
Should be less than a hundred bucks, awesome performance (so far, the fastest PCI card there is!) and still a great card if/when you upgrade your CPU.

EDIT: But if this is a second system and you really have to go cheap on it, the MX-400 PCI is a pretty good choice. All you'd need for the older games. I'd try to find a Voodoo5 PCI though... 3dfx support + FSAA for the older games that only supported 640x480.
That's what I want to do. 🙁

I found a Visiontek GeForce 2 Ti for around $50 at www.ENPC.com. It works great with my 1GHz PIII 🙂

Edit: It seems I glazed over the fact that you were searching for a PCI card - not an AGP. 😱 My apologies.

I must confess, I too didn't realize that it had to be PCI🙁 lol In that case, the MX420 is going to be the best of all these. The Radeon 7000's lack Hardware T&L, and the MX420 has LMA II which does increase performance a decent amount vs the MX400.

Once again - Radeon 9000PCI has got to be BY FAR the most powerful PCI video card bar none. And should be under a hundred bucks!!

where can i find it?

He's talking about the pci version of the above card. So, yes there are pci gf4's.

Yes, you're right. I didn't see that one, probably thought it was a GF2 MX. My bad.😱

You make a point there.... if you need it NOW NOW NOW, I can't seem to find one for you. A quick look at newegg and pricewatch only brings up AGP cards. If you can hold in there for a couple weeks, they should turn up. If not, a cheap MX-400 WOULD do the job.
The thing with the R9000 is not only is it much faster, but it also has tons of features to make video playback look better.

Hey - here's a thought - keep an eye open for the ORIGINAL Radeon PCI card. That'd be a better choice than the MX-400 and cost about the same. They've been discontinued so if you can find one it should be cheaper. 😉

Well, the Radeon SDR is a great card, but, I still would put my money on the GF4MX 420. LMA II really does help put some life into the old GF2MX 400.

O, AND I'VE GOT A NEWS FLASH!!!!!!!?😀😀😀

VIA Hardware has reviewed a PCI Radeon 7500!!!!! It might be worth looking for, cause it would no doubt topple every card being discussed here😀😀😀
