Is a geforce 4 ti4800 8x only or did I get a DOA card?

I bought a VisionTek Geforce 4 ti 4800 off ebay and got it a few minutes ago. Popped it in and got nothing, no beep or anything. Fooled around with it and got it to work once for a few second meaning I see the boot up screen fine, but when it goes to where is counts the ram and hard drives, the letters all freak out and it is unreadable. I am pretty sure it is dead, as I tried it in another computer with the same thing. The fan vibrates like crazy and don't know if that is causing the letters to freak the one time I got it to work. The only other possibility is that it is an agp 8x only card and is incompatible with my agp 4x. I researched it as best I could before I bought it and thought it was 2x/4x/8x compatible, but I could be wrong. It could have been damaged when it was mailed, I was suspicious when I first went to the mail box and saw it in there in only a flimsy bubble mailer, no box! I want to know before I e-mail the guy.

Thanks

they are , but some of the 8x/4x cards work in slots that have a minimum voltage on the AGP slot if I remember correctly......I'll see if I can find anything real quick

This is the time I kick myself for not getting the optional $2.50 insurance. I have no idea if it was good or bad when the guy shipped it, but if it was damaged during shippment, shouldn't he be at fault for not putting it in a box?

The GF4's and the AGP 8X standard came along too close together for the Ti cards to be 8X when first released. Then, when the GPU was upgraded to 8X, it was 4X/ 8X (and I am almost certain that there never has been any VGA card that was exclusively 8X).
