the FX51 is no longer made. getting a 3800 would be about the same. the fx-55 is the fastest at the moment.

the 4000+ was the fx-53

problem is, it's pretty hard to find one at a competitive price, since AMD pretty much end-of-lifed it when the FX-53 came out, rather than shifting it down the lineup. If you're looking for overclocking, the 51 just isn't gonna cut it any more. It tops out at about 2.4GHz, which is not that impressive. The stock specs are equal to a 3400+, which is around $230. In fact, the $140 3000+ and $190 3200+ (socket 939) can both overclock to 2.6GHz, so it's a far better choice, being substantially cheaper and not requiring more expensive, slower registered DDR. Unless someone is just giving it to you, it's pretty pointless to look at one.

The FX's are too expensive IMO. I would much rather get a cheaper CPU like one of the 90nm ones and oc it. AA oced there 3000+ and 3200+ to 2.6GHz. I am not saying you could get it there but 2.4GHz should easily be reached.

with any amd64 your real concern if you are considering performance is just the mhz. Any a64 at 2.4 ghz is a n fx-51's or 53's close equal. Yes the fx series has a 1mb cache, but bump your chip up another 50mhz say and that compensates for it. That being said the fx series have unlocked multipliers and will generally overclock higher than a normal a64 chip. And of course they are running fast without an oc to begin with. I really can't be bothered to pay for an fx though, why not just buy a 3500 or 3800 or even 3200 for that matter, oc it to 2.6ghz and you have an fx-55's performance.

I wouldn't buy it. You're spending significant money for older technology. Unless it can be used to significantly extend the life of some other components, it's a bad buy.

another thing to point out is that the socket 939 fx series if i remember right are the same core as the regular a64s with 1meg l2 cache and a higher clock. if that is true you would be much better off getting a lower clocked a64 and ocing it since the a64s and fx all hit a wall at around 2.4-2.6ghz on air anyways.
