is a E2200 much better then a penitum D

I have 2 dells setups that one is my GF and one is mines.

rough specs are
Pentium D 2.8ghz, 3gb ram, 750gb WD green. win7

E2200, 1gb ram and 250gb, win xp

I'm going to be giving one up to and pretty much merging everything for a main computer. I'm giving it up to a friend. the P-D system runs on DDR1 and e2200 is DDR2 so i cant just even it out having 2gb each. We both have laptops as well. But I'm trying to figure out which is faster and i guess in terms " better."

Keeping the E2200 powered would be nice but i think i would need to upgrade the ram. Max that out to 2x2gb for $100. Most likely swap HD around and run win7.

desktop is mainly for everyday stuff and i still once in a while log on to counter-strike. Both should be decent for my normal usage. GF does minor photoshop on it. has no problems either way.

It slaughters the pentium D
the pentium D is THAT slow🙂
boggles the mind but its true
I've experienced both chips in my upgrade paths
and the pentium d was a pig with power as well.

What do you mean by "it lags"? Lag in games is generally caused by internet connection issues.

i meant to say i dont see problems and it doesn't lag.

but either way i'm going to run with the E2200. As i read more to people OCIng this to 3.0ghz the more it sounds better but then i read DELL mobo will not allow for this easily.

A BSEL mod might work depending on your setup.

Pentium 4 is just a terrible CPU. How I hate them. Some users have them at work and they're constantly complaining. A generation Intel would rather forget I think.

My 2.13Ghz E6600 at work blows the highest clocked P4s to pieces and beyond.

you just have to make sure you can reverse the BSEL if the machine doesn't POST. You have no way of forcing the memory to stay within spec since it's a Dell BIOS, so there are no guarantees.

E2200 is a modest improvement over D

E2200 OC to 2.8 - 3.0 GHz, is a major improvement Over the D.

😎

Its not, its a dell, speced to budget components. Who knows what might fail.

Be reasonable.

I am being reasonable. In fact, the very reason I even mentioned a BSEL mod is because it's a Dell. It's a straightforward procedure that's been done on quite a few Dells (with that same processor, no less) in the past.

well when my friend is ready to pick up my old Pentium D, i'll go and order 4gb of ram and see how that E2200 runs with it. I dont spend much time on it mainly because its my gf's main rig. she puts her silly themes and stuff.

hopefully E2200, 4gb od DDR2 800mhz, 750gb and i think i have a 8600GT in that my old one that i'm moving over will be decent enough for me.

I do not know what is the price of the E2200 that you found.

You should consider this one, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116264

Because it default clock is 2.4GHz it is more conceivable that it will do easily 3GHz.

😎

If that were a newer motherboard, Jack, that would be a good suggestion, but he is using an older motherboard that shipped with a Pentium D. Meaning, that if it takes a C2D, it will likely ONLY take a 65nm C2D. Not a 45nm C2D like you linked.

to me that would be $50 wasted...

mainly because my penitium D is OK for what i need it to do. so swapping computers to a E2200, which everyone says it should be a small jump forward, then it should really be decent for me once i pick up 4gb of ram to back it up.

the desktop is mainly for school work. And downloading random stuff. Nothing beastly like gaming other then the simple CS 1.6 and the photoshop once in a bluemoon. But like i said i got by with the D so the E2200 should be ok. This is a dell setup anyways so if parts start to go bad i'll just build one rather then repair it.
