Is a decent $450 computer possible?

I hate posting threads like this but I'm in a time crunch. I need to spec a computer out for under $450 by tonight. The only requirements is I don't need the monitor/keyboard/mouse and it has to be over 512mb ram, ATI Radeon 7200 and 1.5ghz CPU(obviously these are obtainable but that?s what I was given to be better than). I need this by tonight when I head back to work. Its been a couple of years since I built a rig from the ground up. Had several others apart and refurbished since then though. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Edit: Mainly looking for suggestions although links would help a ton. I was thinking of a Socket A board with and ATI X700 or equivalent.

need windows?

it'll be a bit harder with the windows tax

ugh newegg's website redesign blows

yeah you'd be better off waiting for a dell sale and then adding in the x700.

You won't play BF2 on it, but it would be OK for light gaming and more than enough for a great netsurfer/word processor/emailer-- that kind of thing. I tried to make a 939 setup, but it wouldn't stay on target, in terms of the cost.

That 3400 is the most expensive Sempron. If you had to lower the cost, you could cut the processor down to the cheapest 256k cache Sempron, which would save you about $50 if you needed it. You could maybe upgrade the burner a bit, to a DVD burner maybe, or get a larger HDD if you wanted.

Whichever one you choose, you will be able to overclock nicely with that board and that RAM.

Edit: And yep, if you need Windows, that means -$100 to spend on the hardware.

I'm curious as to why you suggest Socket A and ECC Registered RAM.

Why not replace the CPU, mobo, and RAM with:

$75 - Sempron 754 2800+

$75 - Biostar 6100 754

$75 - 1GB G.SKILL PC3200

Last two configurations (one of them, as changed by cKGunslinger) look really good. Go for either one, you'll be set.

Thanks guys. My friend wanted to build one rather than buy a complete setup so the Dell is out of the question. I might skimp on the CPU or case and go with something other than a Biostar board, had nothing but problems with them in the past. Has Biostar got any better?

good choice of parts...maybe add another $38 for another gig of ram (or get the 1gb of g.skill, corsair, ocz, other name brand) -- whicher is cheapest

'm not sure where a decent $27 case can be had but if you spend an extra $23 (to make it $50 for the case/psu), you'll get a much better case and power supply and be EXACTLY at $450

This is what I came up with. I used some of the ideas posted here then tweaked them a little. If you see any compatibility issues be sure to let me know. I didn't have time to hyperlink everything but it should be obvious. Thanks.

It's actually $424 with shipping.

I think you're on the right track, but you really *must* get a board fit for overclocking. Try this setup...

$76 1GB PC3200 (ms4me.com)
$74 eVGA 128-P2-N352-TX Geforce 6600LE 128MB DDR (newegg.com)
$69 Sempron 64 2500+ (ewiz.com maybe? can't remember...)
$65 Biostar GeForce 6100-M7 (newegg.com)
$55 WD800JB 80GB hard disk (zipzoomfly.com)
$39 ASUS DVD burner (newegg.com)
$27 case & PSU (supergooddeal.com)
$11 Encore ENF656-ESW-INPR 56K modem (newegg.com)
$416 total

The most important thing here is the board. Get the Biostar GeForce 6100-M7 (or comparable).

The Biostar TForce and a 256mb cache Sempron 64 is your best bet. It's the best cheap overclocker, and it's popular, and would provide nice performance for the cost.

I have the Chenming case I suggested. For $45 it's fantastic. Not as solid (or heavy) as the Older Antecs (my last case was the Antec Solution SLK), but made with EXACTLY the same materials (same plastic, same steel) as Antec's newer $100 range models. If you need a budget case w/o PSU it's definitley worth checking out.

It's only drawback is that it doesn't come with an 80mm for the front.

I figured I was still under the $450.00 limit. Haven't used newegg in ages and didn't know how to find the shipping price without losing my setup.

The future owner doesn't know how to overcock or even know how to install a device if needed. I don't think getting an over clocking board will be needed. I rather trust a good brand name board than a name that is related to cheap boards. Also for the other, went with a socket 754 rather than socket A, didn't know the prices almost matched.
