Is a D- considered failing?

If you get a D- in a class, is it considered barely passing, or failing? What about a D?

It's not a "fail" but it's pretty piss poor and if in college may not be applicable for credit, depending on policy.

A "D" can be good or bad, depending on the context you're using it in.... ;)

Heck, can you even get a D-? I always assumed a D is the lowest possible score you can get to still pass. That's why I dunno where the heck a D- fits into things, considering an F is a clear-cut failure.

D is considered a "passing" grade at my school though if your average were a D on a pass/fail course it would count as a failure. Furthermore, getting a second D in your major, or at least it that's how it was in mine, would result in termination of the major.

Edit: We don't have D-, just D and D+. Anything lower is F.

The reason I ask is cuz I need to do a conversion chart of letter grades to numeric grades. Here in NY, 65 is passing. Using a typical scale, this puts a D at about 65 (A=95,B=85,C=75), and a D- at 62, thus making it a failing grade. I didn't know if I need to redo my scale to make a D- a 65 instead.

wtf 65 is passing? Did they lower the standards yet again?

This is for jr. high/high school. 64 is passing in Fairfax, Virginia. 60 is passing at the school we work with in Boston. I don' t know what it is elsewhere.

It's passing in some Cal States here... weird enough... its failing in some CCs... probably just so you can meet UC requirements if you want to transfer there.

If you say, but as I said earlier, D is for Diploma. With some of the bullshit, unrelated classes I have to take for my major, I don't care if I pass them with a D.

You must get at least a C or higher in your major for it to count for graduation at my College. So a D+ is just as bad as a F when it somes to Graduating.

I didn't fail. I have to convert letter grades to numeric grades to put them into our database and calculate what percentage failed. Using the scale I initially made, a kid with a D- would fail, since his numeric conversion was a 62, whereas you'd need a 65 to pass.

It's one of these things where no one solution seems to fit, so I'm trying to figure out if I can leave it as is, for now.

if you are talking highschool in my area you have to maintain at least a c to be passing.
anything lower than a c and you are failing...
